The reason for the Electoral College was because it could take months for a >states votes to be counted and make their way to the capitol. So the states >appointed electors that would then take their will of their state and cast >votes for their people.

Something that anyone that ever took an American History class in HS or a >Civics class would know.

The office of President was originally proposed as an office that Congress would choose the leader for. Some thought that was a bad idea, so the Electoral College was the compromise they came to. It was meant to PREVENT
the people from directly selecting the President while also preventing one single group (Congress) from doing so. This was accomplished by allowing the states to choose who is elected President.

The Founding Fathers who wanted a public vote were worried about power
being too concentrated. The ones against this were worried about well-organized "democratic mobs," or local interests in populated areas, being able to sway the outcome of an election (they were also worried about the "educational levels" of the voting masses... something that is certainly
still a concern today!). So, instead of going with the popular vote or a Congressional vote, they chose the state vote.

I have never heard anyone mention anything about the time factor until now.

I took American History in HS and was on two academic team as an American History specialist over the course of my 12 year primary school career.
    We never lost.
