That said, BBSes which used to be dial in systems before we all got on the internet, usually were (and often still are) a computer in someone's home. There used to be, and for many still is, the idea that by connecting to their system, they are inviting you into their home, and like to know a little bit about you.

here's something to think about... a BBS is like the operator's home... you are visiting in their world... do you go to your neighbor's house for a BBS and not tell them your real name? same basic thing... but i've also been an operator for 30+ years so i have a much different outlook than folks who haven't been around as long...
Me personally, I don't particularly care, but I rather real looking names at least, if someone signs in as "Big Dong" I'm probably not going to be impressed.

I think you'll find most users in BBS land don't use real names. Your SySop may require a real name to create an account but that is not normaly shared with anyone. Everyone respects one anothers privacy. I don't consider demanding privacy as being "paranoid". It's my God given "RIGHT". Welcome, you're in good company here.

yeah but i cant go into your house via the bbs and stick my balls in your mashed potatos.
i can just type my name and password in and act like a jerk in your msg areas and nobody really gets hurt.

your experience is different from mine, then... since the early '80s when i first got into BBSes (and paying $1200US per month
in LD telco calls) they have always been operated like they were the operator's home... one has always been expected to act
accordingly... if you come to my house for a visit, hangout, BBQ, etc, i expect to be introduced to you by real name... whether
we continue to use that real name over the course of the visit or later visits is something else entirely...

yeah but you have it backwards... BBSes came first by a decade or more... everything else is trying to duplicate or replace BBSes ;)

you can't do that in real life either... not if you expect to leave without serious injury...

that depends on the definition of hurt... words can and do hurt people every day...
Might not be now, and might not have ever been to some, but to others is sure is. Back in the day when PCs cost a lot more than they do now, a lot of times the BBS was not the only thing that one used their PC for. Some people are/were paranoid about who might be logged on to their PC from remote, probably for similar reasons as one could be paranoid about using

I ask for a "Real Name" for fidonet. I don't care what you tell me it is,
if it looks like a holy high elf moderator won't netmail me I accept it.
Hell, I've used the same "Real Name" on BBSes since 1985.

This coming from someone who once refered to users as "pukes"..
i dont want someone who thinks they can use my system as a proxy to attack another server.
If you're that paranoid about who's logged into your PC, then you probably wouldn't want to run a BBS.

i really dont like any of the reboots. i think spiderman is too weird and corney of a character to have on the big screen. like the fantastic four.
