I remember hearing about divx discs working that way, but I don't
think HD id that. HD-DVD came years later and competed with blu-ray
for 1080p HD, u-ray eventually won.

I've seen some music albums sold as Super Audio CD (SACD), which has surround sound and a higher bit rate than regular CDs. I've never had a player that could read SACD audio, but I've heard someone found out the X-Box 360's HD-DVD drive can apparently read the SACD layer to rip the audio:

I have 1 or 2 SACD albums, and I've thought it would be handy to have a drive that can read the SACD audio so I could rip it.. Those discs tend to have a regular audio CD layer too so they can be played in standard CD players.
