you probably won't be back to see this but the bulletin board system is an older concept where someone runs a computer program and people called it and played games, posted msgs and downloaded files.

web bbses or forums are a bulletin board system too. people post on them.

Welcome - it's the same idea, just a different way of reading/writing
messages, if you connect to the BBS instead of using the web.

Welcome aboard. :) Jump in, you'll catch on (and BBSs are better than web forums), due to clumsy navigation (too much mouse work) and performance issues - most from here are slow as. BBSs are also designed with the assumption that the network isn't always available - back in the day, messages could only be transferred between BBSs at certain times (usually in the wee small houts). Similarly, there are solutions that don't require users to be online to read and write messages - I'm using that now, an offline reader. :)

The "always on network" isn't all it's cracked up to be - the downsides are often poor performance, especially on longer or low bandwidth paths, and unreliability on intermittent or unreliable Internet connections (like poor 3G/4G coverage).

... You could be reading the next message by now.

There are some changes - not having to dial the BBS (using telnet instead now), not having the modem on automatic redial, because the board is busy, and we can now exchange mail continuously, instead of having to wait days for replies to find their way through the netowrk! :) But a lot of the look and feel is still there. :)

my favorite decades. Yeah, think of BBSs like Facebook, but everyone connects to the same computer, and typically instead of millions of users there's like hundreds or maybe thousands.

A lot of older BBSs had message networks like "FidoNet" (Google it) where like once or twice per day the BBS would send messages posted and recieve new messages from other BBSs, so in that way you might read messages on the same subject from people all over the world. (sound familiar)

Now a days BBSs are still a thing, some are basic, but most of them easily let users "dial-in" over the Internet, play games, post messages or chat.

At any rate, welcome. Most of us are WAY excited for you to be here.

This is exactly how I find BBSing today. I missed it back in the days as I was too young to still see it anyhow valid.

But I remember internet from 95+ with usenet, irc, muds and being elite all there just if you could access these services from unix/linux shell with proper toolset to proove that you actually *know* how to use the internet, not MIRCing around and being constantly "nuked" if on Windows 95.

Those were the days where I was dialing in to the internet to download all subscribed usenet groups and read them offline/ then reply and send replies when back online (sounds familiar?)

THen I was chatting as well, but chatting was expensive as every minute mattered, so Usenet was actually much more immersing until I've got DSL at
    ome.

Internet was also all about files and simple hypertext focused on manuals, simply speaking knowledge. I was downloading knowledge... or of course warez.

I find what I see now while BBSing very familiar with my early days Internet experience.

After a month of sharing messages with you guys I find it already cool and I haven't yet started playing door games, experimenting with files (as these can be found easier over the web today) and other stuff that probably you can still tell what to do.

Cool people and even if sometimes I read something that simply asks for moderation I find it ok, especially that offline reading helps quite often to stop yourself before you send a bomb back at somebody who in your opinion pushed the line.

Hard to say if I haven't already. Today's communication over internet services makes us all arrogant assholes. This place is still very very calm and focused!

Well you don't have to worry about background downloads with a BBS. That

In the 90s, there were times on a BBS when I wished I could download a file in the background while playing a game or reading messages, etc.. Some file transfer protocols (such as BiModem) touched on that a bit by allowing you to do an upload and a download at the same time.

BBSs are less prone to "background downloads", but an offline reader will certainly reduce the already small amount of data more, because offline mail is transferred using compression (usually ZIP these days).
