From Weatherman@VERT/TLCBBS to ALL on Thu Sep 11 15:33:00 2008
Hey folks... Thought I'd pick your brains, and maybe even spark a little discussion here at the same time...

I'm in the mood to buy a concealed carry handgun. I was reading some
articles in a gun magazine (Handgunner, I think), and ran across an article reviewing the Ruger LCP and then right after that was another ad for a S&W Model 642 .38 special snubbie. That was about all that was needed to make
me feel like I needed a good CCW...

Anyway... the LCP was looking good in terms of price, size, and styling.
I like the smoothed edges, lack of an external hammer spur, etc. And the
.38 SPL snubbie? Well let's just say it's a classic...

THEN I did some thinking.. Figured I'd research the .380 as a defense
round. Was not really impressed. Wasn't thrilled with the .38 SPL as a defense round either. Also, as I already have a Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum
    with a 6 inch barrel, a Smith&Wesson Model 645 .45 ACP in 5 inch barrel and
    a Taurus Raging Bull .454 Casull with 8 3/8inch barrel, I realized I
already have some excellent holsterable defense rounds, so why complicate things?

What? You mean I'm not likely to find a good concealable .454
Casull or .45 Long Colt? Okay. Not a problem... That leaves .38 SPL/.357 Magnum and .45 ACP.

Looking for opinions here folks... Low-cost, reliable, and easy to carry/conceal are my main criteria. Also would like something that's manageable when the fertilizer hits the ventilation unit.

The Bersa 45 Thunder has caught my attention. Anyone here have any time
with this gun? Will it feed hollow point .45 ACP ammo? I'm not one to use round nose stuff for defense. If I'm in a mode where I want to put
someone or something down, I'm going hollow point all the way. Is the
Bersa worth pursuing, or should I look more towards a .357 snubbie?

Not looking for anyone to make my decision for me, just seeking some input
and figured a message thread might give me the alternate points of view
that would help me make up my mind...

    Thanks!

    Ray

If you go with the Ruger LCP styling, may I suggest the Kel-Tec P-32 (.32
cal) or the P-3AT? (.380 cal) Both are very similar stylings as the Ruger, but they have had quite a bit more "field time."

If you want a weapon with significantly more stopping power, I personally
like my Glock 27. Small frame, shoots a .40. 9 round mag + 1 in the pipe
is very impressive for the known stopping power of .40 + a significant
amount of ammo in the mag.

The one drawback of a Glock is that they cost more than most people are willing to pay. Personally, I think Glock makes a damn good product and the money is well spent. (If purchased.)

    Hope that helps you out.

Don't they *all* fire under water?

The Glock was a fantastic deal when it was half the price of a Browning, Walther or Sig. Nowadays, that differential has eroded away.

The only Glock that was specifically made to be fired underwater is the
Glock 17. (Full sized frame, 9mm round.) All else is at your own risk.
Quite frankly, I've never had to fire my weapon while underwater. I prefer
to *NOT* swim with the fishes. <GRIN>

Who cares? Glock still makes a damn good weapon that still holds its own quite well with the best of them.

Sure, it's a good weapon, but it isn't the *only* good weapon. All I said that it's cost-effectiveness has fallen, since it became the glamour-gun
that all bouffont hairdos have to own.

If you purchase a firearm for the purpose of asthetic contemplation, then
you can pay whatever you like for... whatever you like. If you're looking
for a pistol to *use*, then it makes sense to compare functionality and
price. Glocks may 'hold their own' but if you can locate one of 'the best
of them' for an advantageous price, then you'd be a fool not to consider
it simply because it *isn't* a Glock.

Interesting comments, and while I can't fault the round, I have to admit I have little use and less interest in 9mm. Think I'm going to go with one of the compact .45 ACP options out there. Bersa's 45 Thunder looks attractive, and if Taurus has re-engineered and resolved their frame problems, I'm seriously considering a PT-145. You just have to seriously consider a compact pistol with 10+1 capacity in .45 ACP...
