I imagine an Intel Compute Stick could do this.

i've used kodi and plex and i have an android tv, but it was such a pain in the ass with some things, i just bought a 200 dollar laptop from walmart and i plug it in via hdmi and i have no stuttering or share issues or codec probs like i had with my android box or using plex.

and i have a nice wireless keyboard / gamepad with a mouse tracker

I've been using Plex and I've rarely had a problem with it. I think just once it said the TV couldn't display the file format, but it said I could enable transcoding on the Plex server to get around that. On one TV, Plex has had problems displaying photos, but on our other TV it works fine.. Overall though I've mainly used Plex for movies & TV shows and haven't had much of an issue with it.

I have been using plex for 2 years now, had 3 tv's streaming movies all at the same time with no issues, my router has tri band.
I run plex on an acer N281G thin client eith 4GB mem and 1.8Mhz atom cpu.

I was thinking the same myself.. Ive kinda dove into this thread halfway through but are you speaking of digital video/audio?

one has no white noise with DVA, it's either fully there or not, maybe I should had paid more attention to the thread. the only way you will hear "white noise" on a digital channel is to listen to it on an analog device and either get far enough away from the broadcast tower that the broadcast starts fading (The digital video would be completely gone or buffering at this time) or if the digital broadcast just stop.. thats the only "white noise" that would be heard. any digital and most analog devices would just squelch that out.

Plex has worked fairly well for me for the most part.. I can plug in a laptop, but I'd rather not get the laptop out whenver I want to watch something on the TV. Plex works well enough for me that it's easier to just use Plex.

IMO, SD stuff still looks okay on a HD TV. I imagine the upscaling algorithms do some things to try to make the image look better. You can tell it's SD vs. HD, but I've played some SD shows with Plex that were ripped from DVDs that look decent on a HD TV.

Yeah, DVDs, especially when played on a Blu-Ray player look quite reasonable on a large screen HDTV. Sure, not quite as crisp as a Blu-Ray, but more than acceptable.

yes, but you have plex installed on that low end computer and it transcodes/or streams the videos.

you should be able to do h265 if the tv supports it. ours didnt which is why i went and got the android box which could decode it and later i just used the laptop.
