• Oslo vs. Stockholm vs. Copenhagen?

From Knight@VERT/PHUNC to All on Fri Mar 18 04:50:16 2016
This isn't exactly a hobby, but it is travel related, which to me is a hobby.

My wife and I want to get away from the kids during the upcoming spring break (basically 2-3 weeks from now) and were thinking of traveling to Scandinavia since airfare is pretty cheap (good time to travel there between $450-700 roundtrip, where most of Europe is $1100+, from the Bay Area). We went to Stockholm last spring break and really loved it.

I had never really considered Scandinavia as a destination before, since we loved going to France, Italy, Germany, etc. And of course, when it's winter here we often would go to Mexico and similar so we'd get some warmth and sun. But because the airfare dipped to about $500 roundtrip last year, we hopped on it instantly, and never regretted the experience we had.

Now we're stumped. And each day that goes by, another $50 or so is potentially added to the ticket until we decide and buy.

I almost bought for Oslo tonight. But then my wife and I went back and forth about maybe going back to Stockholm. And Copenhagen is high on the list too, because a lot of our friends on Facebook said it was great (though they hadn't been to Oslo for comparison); also, I'm technically part Danish!

But Oslo is seemingly more amazing. It's beautiful, crazy architecture, mountains nearby, etc. Copenhagen has that "old world" feel. And Stockholm is familiar and would be less hectic since we "know it" already.

    We're really torn.

What do you think? Have you been to any of the three? Which would you prefer, and why? I am hoping you guys can help us figure out where to go (and soon, because prices are going up!)

    Thanks!

    Knight

if you go to norway it's going to be very expensive and they shut down the stores 'n shit very early.

    very conservative culture there.

I'm part Swedish, so I'd go for Stockholm. You could rent a car and drive to the others fairly easily, I think.

Yeah, it's definitely the most expensive of the three. Supposedly Oslo is the most expensive city in Scandinavia and most of Europe. Reminds me too much of home (I live near San Francisco).

After a couple of days of research and talking to people that have been there, I have come up with this:

    OSLO, NORWAY
    * Most expensive city in Europe
    * People are grumpy or not quick to warm up (most people said this)
    * Fantastic visual flair (modern architecture, epic mountains within reach of city boundaries, lots of people out, etc)
    * Can do most everything in 5-6 days

    STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN
    * Least expensive city of the three, yet still very expensive (I know, I went 12 months ago)
    * Not a strong drinking culture (it's accessible, but you don't see a lot of people casually drinking -- but there are dive bars and clubs that seem to gather the more heavy drinkers -- also drinks are insanely expensive)
    * Winter and Early spring is a difficult time to visit the Archipelago (25,000 islands and rocks)
    * People are relatively friendly
    * Can do most everything in 6-7 days

    COPENHAGEN, DENMARK
    * Expensive, like all of Scandinavia, but middle ground
    * Happy warm drinking culture -- as part of hygge (cozy, happy, relaxed) they are often drinking beers on the street, it is legal -- good beer and good wine and interesting cocktails
    * Very hip friendly culture
    * Can do most everything in 3-4 days

We ended up booking a flight to Stockholm. We'll make that our home base, and maybe escape out to Copenhagen by train (5 hours from Stockholm). We're only there for 7 days (6 with the loss from travel), so we'll see.

I'm part Danish, so I was leaning to Copenhagen mostly for that. But, got stuck on reminiscing of last year's Sweden trip. So yeah, we opted for Stockholm. Car might be too far in such a limited length trip (7 days), so we'll probably train it over to Copenhagen.

    Do you speak any Swedish?

dont forget there's some great places to visit right in the united states of america.

Kind of an out of place statement :) But none the less I appreciate the sentiment. Lots of places I still want to go here in the USA.

95% of our trips and vacations are here in the USA, and it's really great to get away to get some perspective. I recommend it to everyone. Europeans live so differently, yet they most closely resemble us (Canada even more of course, as they are almost Americans).

Politically, Europeans are more socialist, with high taxes and a focus on the individual. Somehow they make it work (with exception to the collapsing states in the European Union, like Greece), at least internally to their country (usually).

For example, while Scandinavia is not that diverse, it happens to be top in education. They value individual learning over standardized education. We could learn a lot about that. However, we're very diverse, and our states are like different countries, so it's so much more complicated.

But my point is that by getting away, and spending time in other countries, your perspective changes over time, and you can apply what you have learned and your new opinions back at home.

I wish it was required that every American had to spend some time overseas.

True, but what exactly are you trying to say? There's a whole world out
there, and sometimes it's interesting to explore outside of the home country. It's all about experiencing other cultures, seeing the different sights, and all that stuff. I think some of my most interesting trips have been outside the US.

I agree. It's great to explore other countries, experience other cultures, and see the sights. I've very much enjoyed visiting the other places I've visited (Germany, Switzerland, England, Ireland, Scotland, Brazil), and I hope to be able
to visit more. I haven't visited anywhere in Scandinavia but I think it would be
interesting. I've always wanted to visit Japan too.

Exactly. It's pretty amazing what's out there. I'm proud to be an American (although slightly embarassed these days due to American stupidity that has brewed over the last decade or so), but I also think that other cultural experiences make us stronger. So interesting to see how other people live.

I've met people who lived in literal shacks, but they were kind, giving, interesting to talk to, etc. If I'm honest with myself, I'd say that just about 99% of the people I've met in other countries were incredibly kind. I can't say the same thing about back here. So many damn entitled self-loving assholes. But I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, so that could very well explain that :P

Sadly only about 2 of 20 of my trips are out of the country. So I've well explored a portion of the USA. Looking forward to taking a roadtrip in an RV or similar with my wife and 2 kids one of these days. Almost went this upcoming spring break, but realized that 8 days wouldn't be enough time to explore much by vehicle.

to visit more. I haven't visited anywhere in Scandinavia but I think it would be

I never put Scandinavia on my list of places to visit. Then one day in early 2015 I saw $300 roundtrip tickets to Sweden, and I booked it immediately. (I ended up upgrading the tickets to a plus fare for the meals, baggage, seat selection, etc but at under $600 RT it was a steal).

Great experience. Stockholm reminded me of Paris, but without the overwhelming focus on art and history.

I've always wanted to visit Japan too. Tokyo and Kyoto are on my list!
