• Fokker Flies...

From Angus McLeod@VERT/ANJO to Digital Man on Mon Apr 23 05:21:00 2007
If there's one thing I object to, it's pilots of that latter-day Ugly-Stik known as the Extra-300 calling my Dreidecker a 'red step-ladder'. Anyway...

After the repairs, completed a couple of weeks ago, today was the first
time I've had to take her up for a spin. It was a gorgeous day without a cloud in the sky (which actually *isn't* the best for flying, IMHO, but
still a gorgeous day) and after an initial problem getting the engine to
fire (flooded) and pull strongly (rich) she lifted off after a very short run... in fact before I could get the throttle advanced to maximum she was already climbing away smoothly and rapidly.

Pity you can't take photos and fly at the same time. Maybe I need to construct some sort of helmet rig to hold the camera? Anyway, a fellow
member took the camera and snapped a few:

I really love this aeroplane. It's a pain to pack into the car. It's a
slow process to assemble and disassemble it for transportation. It's
scary as fuck to fly! But it's a beauty. When eventually this one
becomes unserviceable (old age or a bad crash) I will of course, build a bigger one. Arizona Model Aircraft do a 1/3 scale plan, which would push
the wingspan up from 60" to 94". (My tripe is about 21.3%)

I've been getting a hardon for 33% models recently. Just look at this 29%
    Gee Bee Z pictured here:

The City of Springfield, Mass. Notice that they have a 33% plan available too! I've had my eye on this 20% 'Z' from Adrian Page for a while:

    http://www.adrianpage.com/zpage.html

and it's probably the next kit I buy, but the 33% just gives me a woody!
Yes, I'll most likely go with the Page 20% first. And here is a photo of
    the 33% Gee Bee R2:

    http://www.aero-sports.com/whplans/geebee33.html

    Adrian Page also does a 20% and a 25% R2!

The Granville Brothers built some ugly-assed aircraft that were so ugly
    they were things of beauty!

Ok, if it's hard enough to get a 60" wing in your car, how do you plan on gettinga 94" wing in there? I'd say buy a truck but since I saw a total of onea1/2ton while I was down there I guess that's out, maybe time for a minivan Angus? Second, for 1/3 scales, I want a J3 on floats :)

    Fold it in half! ;-)

Actually, the larger models frequently have two separate 'plug-in' wing
panels rather than a single, one-piece wing. I don't know what that particular set of plans are like, but in any case, my love for big models
will have to be unfulfilled until I acquire a van or build a custom
    trailer.

The one thing you can't fold up is the fuselage.

    Second, for 1/3 scales, I want a J3 on floats :)

Aaaarrrggh! Not the blasted J3 Cub! They're like assholes. *Everybody*
has one. In fact, they're like NOSE-holes. Everybody's got *two*!

Yes, but how many have one on floats? :)
