doncha just love the spam postings by unauthenticated randos from the internet? someone needs to tighten their guest account to prevent rando postings like that...

I usually make it where unvalidated people can not post.

that's how it should be but someone either missed that setting or left their system open on purpose in the name of "free speech"...

As it SHOULD be. Let them read everything and look around, even download, but only validated users can post or upload files.

I go farther - I don't allow read access to my networked message areas.
Local areas are read only, and you can download files as a guest.

For too long, I thought of the echoes as (relatively) private, but having a bot scrape entire othernets ruins the sense of intimacy (for lack of a
    better word) of the echoes.

Ya, I still get a bit miffed that some of the echos are cross posted to open public sites, but that is the nature of things, I guess

I'm the same, except for "Uploads to the sysop", which users can't download from. That area is so users can leave me files, which has been used in the past.

I go even further (? farther, sounds like fart-her)... I turn the BBS off when people login.

I couldn't agree with you more. This thread marks the first I've heard of
this happening and it's boggling my mind that anyone finds value in such
a small readership to scrape 'othernets' as you call it.

I love the intimacy of the echo mail system. It's hella boss.
