• Delightful window manager

From art@VERT/FATCATS to All on Thu Aug 15 18:43:59 2013
    Ahoy all,

With all this talk of window managers, anyone who's into not having any features should check my window manager, which is a fork of the w9wm code.

    https://gitorious.org/w9wm-arfonzo

It compiles on almost anything, just requires Xlibs, and runs on everything from ancient boxes to modern machines. Coupled with xbindkeys, it provides a pretty complete, low resource WM environment. Of course you can start your Gnome and KDE services or use Xsessions, etc, too, with w9wm-arfonzo.

Definitely not for the faint of heart, but I thought I'd mentione it, if anyone is interested.

    Kind regards,

It looks like old-school Mac and Windows. It's kind of retro. I'll have to
    play with it I think...

Not really my style. Then again, I can't prove anything. I wish I would have taken screenshots of my fully configured fluxbox WM I had. It was pretty nice and very lightweight as well.

But when you say "screenshots or GTFO," I'd have to do the latter. :(

    Regards,
    Nick

Indeed, my window manager is far too minimal for most users, I would imagine. Fluxbox is much more featureful (and consumes significantly more resources), last I tried it.

There's only one thing to style--picking a background (if you want one). It is a bit of a reactionary coding project after spending some time in GNOME3 and XFCE and other bloatful DEs, but I can appreciate it's the exact opposite of what most people seek (and therein lies the beauty :) ).

    Kind regards,

Hey, as long as it works for you, that's all that matters, right? Plus the fact that you forked it yourself, so it's a project of yours to be proud of. Thanks for sharing it with us, Art!

lol. Even though my heads up my ass and you don't like to hear from me,
I'll challenge you this one, somehow I got one from about 10 years ago
    I'll share with ya:

It says Monday, Nov 11th, which would be 2002, 11 years ago, wow. The
friend on the other end sent me his fluxbox customization in return:

And here's a windowmaker customization from around that time:

Boy am I glad I stopped customizing and fooling with .rc files! Who the
hell has time for that anymore! People are now storing their .dotrc
files as projects on github, its the "in" thing to do, lol. I'm
actually a little sad that vim doesn't do the python help I like out of
the box and requires about ~1 page of .vimrc, I'm very much now of the
mantra "just use the tool how it comes by default", but vim doesn't do
syntax checking of python code out of the box D: (or maybe it does, the
most recenty version is very python integrated?) (i use 'pyflakes' for
    this, btw)

Where did you ever get the idea I didn't like you? Because of the Mystic debacle? As much as you're probably not in the least bit worried about what I think, that topic was squashed and I'm over it. I don't hold anything against you in the future, nor do I care to hold grudges against anyone in the BBS scene. lol

I'd have to say that my fluxbox setup was quite a bit more extensive than either of those. I think I like yours better though, the background of the other guy's would probably piss me off and/or blind me while trying to read the transparent xterm window.

And here's a windowmaker customization from around that time:

    http://1984.ws/wm.jpg

Yikes! Very bright for my taste, but it's setup quite well and everything matches. Then again, you mentioned that these were over a decade old, so I'm sure even your taste has changed these days.

I definitely don't share my configurations with anyone or anything, unless they ask how I did something or whatever. I don't mind tinkering around with the fluxbox configuration, if I have some free time and don't fill it with anything else more productive. I don't do it on a daily basis or anything, and to be honest, I haven't had fluxbox running anywhere around here for over a year. All of my current running linux setups don't have a GUI at all, and then my Windows 7 box is mainly for gaming and hosting Linux VMs. :)

    Regards,
    Nick

I couldn't live without GUI. I get tired of command line interpretations. For BBS it's ok but when you have a program that needs like a lot of options and it
can't be batched then it's a real hassle.

I fired up an Ubuntu server VM this week. I like being able to leave the window manager off, log into a bash prompt, and run startx to start a WM if I want it, and leave it at the command line otherwise.
