• H.265 video

From Dumas Walker@VERT/CAPCITY2 to ALL on Sat Jun 12 11:10:00 2021
I have a camera that takes H.264 and H.265 compressed video. With the 264 setting, my laptop seems to have no issues playing the videos back. With
the 265 setting, the video is choppy. I am running debian and did some searching. I do appear to have the libraries installed for 265. Do I also need to install the 'dev' libraries/packages to get the video to playback correctly? Are there any tips/tricks you all have re: playing H.265 video
    on a linux machine?

    Thanks!

Which program are you using to reproduce the video?

With Mplayer I have found that it uses a single CPU core by default, and you have to enable
multithreading for it at runtime if you want to play heavy videos, for example.

The video was shot at 1080p 90FPS. The machine is running the latest
version of debian and has a multi-core intel processor (although I cannot remember which one).

I have tried both vlc and mpv. That is an interesting point you bring up. The machine is running an i3-4000M with a 2.90x4 CPU, but I don't know that it is attempting to use them all or not. I know there are some programs where you can specify the number of cores to use on the command line but based on the help output vlc does not appear to have an option to force it to use N cores.

Or I am missing something that allows me to play H.265/HVEC video. It
could even be the camera. The H.264 video it produces, using the same
    settings otherwise, looks just fine.

I am not certain where I would find one. All of the HD video on YT that I download appears not to be H265.

A lot of GPUs have built-in h264 hardware acceleration. I don't know the state of
hardware h264 acceleration, but it's probably much more spotty, particularly if it's
an older laptop. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that your machine just doesn't have any
    hardware acceleration for h265

The i3-4000M is a Haswell architecture, the iGPU doesn't support
QuickSync decoding for h.265 in that generation, so it's doing CPU
decoding, which your system *should* be able to handle, but it's pretty
high overhead, which would account for stuttering, and will vary based
on memory and hdd performance as well.

From other messages (i3-4000M) QuickSync does have h.264, but not h.265 hardware support, so you are correct in your assertion... I did take the
    time to check.

Intel Skylake (5000 series) added hardware h.265

    Thanks!

To everyone who responded -- thanks to you all. It *appears* that the
issue may not be the hardware I am playing back on, but the power source I
was using while recording. I still need to retest 90fps but, at 60fps off
the battery pack, I recorded video that played back without issue.

The video I took that had difficulty was taken when the camera was plugged
into my car's power vs. the battery. I did not take that into
    consideration.

I am testing 90fps from battery source right now so we will see what
    happens. :)

on edit - nope that wasn't it after all. Apparently 60fps good, 90fps bad!
