• Java is great!

I am a programmer student. And recently started te
to play around with multi-threading and socket networking in Java and it is awesome!.

All you need on GNU/Linux is to have java and javac binaries and the other erequired libraries and such.

To install just do sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jre (for the compiler) and sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jdk.

I made a mistake there. JDK is for the compiler and jre is for the interpreter/vm.

To start is ok, but if you are a beginner, I strongly suggest to learn C first. Don't become another "Java only" guy ;) open your mind and explore as much as you can. Personally I think that Java is a decent programming language, but what I don't really get is the overwhelming bloat of the J2EE world.

Oh yes. Of course. C is on the list, infact it is more important to me for what I want to do.

I just like simple old openjdk.

I must say too many languages try be like C but they never cut it. Go for example. The f**k were they thinking. That's just my opinion.

I don't think it's that they are trying to be like C, but rather they're trying to evolve programming languages in general and trying to make something better. But what may be better seems to be a matter of opinion sometimes. Google seems to do things a bit differently as well.. Sometimes I wonder what they're thinking with things they do.

I haven't really looked into Go yet.

    Any specific critiques?

I haven't looked into Go myself yet, so I'd have to defer to others' opinions. I
was just thinking that with newer languages, in general, language developers seem
to try to provide newer & better ways of doing things.

Maybe check out Nim. It is a compiled language. It can compile though to many languages like C/C++ and even Javascript and Objective-C.

By default it compiles to C I believe. Building the compiler from source is easy also and works.

Nim has a Pascal syntax but relies on Python-like indentation for blocks. Unlike Pascal which relied on indentation for some thing but not for functions and procedures.

Well Go was created by some pretty wise and old people one of which was Ken Thompson I believe. Anyway, I don't hate any language but I do prefer other ones. The C syntax is the best though, IMHO.
