    Hey dudes,

Once upon a time I registered Ambrosia and would very much like to play this damn game. :)

I use linux (ubuntu, specifically). I've been unable to get Deuce's version
4.0 to work, and think that's a dead end.

What I'd like to do is figure out a way to get it working in wine. I already have an "always on" vnc running on display 1:0 and am able to open programs
on that display. I have mapped d: to my /doors/ directory, and mapped e: to
my /mystic/ directory. Oh yeah, I'm using mystic :)

Anyway, it seems like no matter what I do, I can't get the output of the game to output to my telnet bbs. I can see it launch just fine in wine (on VNC)
but it doesn't seem to understand socket descriptors...or maybe I don't.

Anyone been down this road before? Any pointers?

Deuce's version works very well on my board and I'm on Linux/64. I can help
you getting this to work in native Linux instead of Wine if you'd like.

The little gotcha is to get the proper Ubuntu libstdc++ which is this one: libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2_2.95.4-27_i386.deb

Once you have that, it should work very well. If you can't find it, I can
send it to you but it should not be too hard to find.

Also, you can join Ambroshia on The Bottomless Abyss, my local game is very active with several daily players.

I have also made a little door so you can "Forget" your spells in your spellbook, a feature that apparently doesn't exist or is buggy in Ambroshia. With that little addon, it makes magic users very happy.

    Cheers!

Marisag over on Dovenet and Gamenet has ported a version which is supposed
to work on ubuntu 64-bit. I could not get it to work but I am not running ubuntu like she or you are. You might give that a try.

Search for 'ambroshia-linux-bundle sourceforge' in google and it should
    take you there.

Thanks. I have that lib that you posted and I am able to run the game itself, but can't run the configuration for some reason. It gives a glibc complaint
(I can post it later) and then does a core dump but wont' actually run.

I took a look at what this configuration tool does and there is nothing to worry about. I don't recall exactly what it does but I figured at the time it was not really that much of a road block.

    Cheers!

    Excellent. :)

I grabbed the ambroshia-linux-bundle package from here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/ambroshia-linux-bundle/

I unarchived that into a directory and followed the instructions to install
the libs and reinstall sqlite3. All went off without a hitch. However, trying to run 'ambconfig' results in (which I'm capturing for posterity):

    ryan@monterey:/doors/ambro$ ./ambconfig
Fatal error: glibc detected an invalid stdio handle
    Aborted (core dumped)

The package here includes all the addon stuff anyway, so I don't need to configure any of that. However, I was hoping to be able to add my
registration info. Running 'strings ambconfig' helped me determine that a single 'register.key' file (all lowercase) should contain registration information. Adding those details line-by-line and saving the file as register.key got me in a good spot.

Hopefully that's all it takes and now I'm good to go!

Indeed it is! I've been rediscovering a handful of games recently, only
locally on the board that I'm currently setting up...but they're fun nevertheless.

Admittedly it would be cool to figure out how to set up the 4.5 version
/just/ because. I can't explain why I care but I do :P Maybe one day.

I saw nuskooler wrote a door32 shim and I tried getting that to work, but didn't have any luck. Something tells me 'wine' isn't ideal in this scenario. Oh well.

Lord 2 CNW is pretty neat. I also found Pit 4.15 registered. And I've always loved LORE.

One of these days I'd like to become proficient at BRE, SRE, FE, FH, those types of games. I'm also intimidated by (and interested in) Ultimate Universe and Tradewars. Those are further down the line I suppose.

At this point I have 40 doors configured, which is waaaaaay too many...but I don't care. It's my bbs. :P
