• Multiple Nets

From deepthaw@21:1/101 to All on Tue Nov 17 09:46:21 2020
Hey all, threw ENiGMA 1/2 on my poor mistreated server named Lappy last
night, and I'm really enjoying it.

One thing I'm having trouble with is sending messages out now that I have
both fsxNet and SciNet on my system. SciNet is running a-okay but fsxNet
seemed to stop once I had both of them configured. I'm still receiving
echomail okay, but nothing I send seems to work.

BinkD shows the packets are being sent to my hub, but I'm still assuming the error is on my end rather than the hub since only one of us knows what we're doing. And it ain't me.

Any special tips I should be aware of in this situation? Once I'm at a
computer more conducive to it, I'll past some of the relevant entries from
both my enigma and binkd setups.

Also, what's the link for the discord? Wouldn't mind chatting with other
folks and hopefully helping people once I've been helped and gotten through
    the growing pains stage.

If you can share some polling logs of when you sent packets to your HUB I can try and confirm what happened at the HUB if that helps :)

I'm going to give it a bit - I switched back to working on my SBBS system which already works. ENiGMA 1/2 is really cool, but not yet ready IMHO. I'll probably keep it around as a project system while SBBS is my daily driver.

I'm thinking it could be something as simple as you sent packets to a HUB but included a packet password with them when none was expected, if so the HUB would have dropped the packets and not tossed them.

The big one to me is not being able to configure the scanned bases for users, and only having (so far as I could find) a global new scan. I'm guessing if you use an offline reader or access through gopher (which is insanely cool that it supports) or nntp it's much less of an issue.

Don't get me wrong - the software looks amazing and I was shocked at how easily I got it up and running and how snappy it was.

Ok, that's helpful, thankyou. Sorry, I tend to bite when people say
things like "it's not ready" or "it's rough around the edges" without
    saying why.

Although Enigma 1/2 isn't my project, I know how difficult it can be to
get people trying something other than mystic or synchronet, (Although it
seems to be getting easier) and although it might not be ready for you
yet (and that's cool) it's (a) difficult to know what to improve on, and
    (b) discourages others from having a go if you don't say why.

I hope this doesn't come off as an attack, it's not meant to be, and not
so much meant for you, as it is for others trying out new stuff as well..
help us help you kind of thing :)

I normally hate to leave feature requests/notes on projects because it feels like I'm trying to tell people smarter than me what to do. "(not) ready for prime time" was probably harsher than I meant it to be.

Given my general social awkwardness, I still don't know how to effectively leave feedback to project maintainers without feeling like I'm coming off as ungrateful.

I love ENiGMA so far, and I can easily see myself running it once that option and a handful of other small (to other, but big to me) things are done. (None of which I can think of off-hand.)

I can understand that. I would say "don't feel like that" but I know it's
hard not to. I feel the same way when reporting things I think are bugs
in synchronet to rob. I also know lots of others feel the same way.

Unless you say something like "your project sucks because it doesn't have feature x." I think most people really appreciate honest, constructive feedback.

It's up to you of course, I can't speak for Nu, and already feel like I'm standing on his toes a little by writing these messages.

I do know some authors tend to make people feel the need to walk on
eggshells, most aren't like that though. Nu's definitly not like that, in
my experience he's a really cool guy and I'm sure he'd appreciate the
feedback / issues, mostly because it shows you care, if it's not
something he wants to do, he'll say that.

Feedback/comments/feature requests/bugs/etc. are always welcome. Again, GitHub issues helps me track that is all. To be fair though, if you're not going to use it, it's obviously a lesser priority than features people I know use the thing are asking for.

I'm terrible at forgetting things people ask for lol. Someone says they
would like feature x and unless I do it then and there, chances are I
    forget.

I'm also guilty of not always using issue trackers. Just the other day I reported to Rob a bug in cryptlib/syncterm, I didn't even think of
checking the website to see if there was a syncterm issue tracker (there
is) and the bug had already been reported.

Don't feel that way, that is the only way to make software better.. I am no
way near Apam, or NuSkooler with my programming but I have worked on Image
BBS for the Commodore 64 back in the mid 90's and took up again with it over the past 2 years that I got back into BBS' and if it weren't for people
asking for things or telling us what they didn't like Image BBS v3.0 would be no way near what it is. In fact, when it is run on a Emulated C64 with CMD HD and SuperCPU emulation this thing rivals most Amiga/PC boards with Speed and use.. We have built this thing so if you didn't know it was run on a
Commodore 64 you would think it was run on a PC.. Trust me NuSkooler won't think badly if you ask for something or tell him something isn't quite
right.. The way he helped this total linux Newbie in me when I first put my Enigma up leads me to believe what I just said!

Thats awesome - because I want to see more cool enigma and mystic joints - nothing against synchronet, i'd also like to see more modified sync boards.. but hopefully you'll dig the ability to talk with the dev and make something cool- no matter what software you land on. :P

I'm probably going to keep SBBS on my system, but use it to patch in the gaps that ENiGMA can't fill right now. Export a QWK network and some Usenet, and maybe even see if I can get it to seamlessly handle displaying some of the XBin art I've been working on.

    Howdy,

DOVE-Net, Miconet & Sci-Net seem pretty cool. DOVE is a QWK net, but Deon/ alterego may be able to set you up with an FTN feed if
    you ask nicely.

Yup, I can help with an FTN feed of DoveNet - since I feed it internally to my other BBS over FTN.

Some of Dovenet is available over FidoNet as well - if you have a Fido feed.

Nice, that's a lot of networks! Glad it's working well for you!

I'm only carrying fsxNet, ArakNet, RetroNet, and SpookNet right now. What others might you suggest? Some are not my cup of tea, but out of 12 I'm sure there is something in there that may be of interest hehe

Right now I have TQWNet, DoreNet, SciNet, pINet, my own local board network, and fsxNet on there.. Runs well, piNet is dead, SciNet is very popular and busy, DoreNet is nice not very busy but nice. That's all that is on my
Enigma, on Mystic, in addition to those, I have RetroNet, CBMNet, Fido, GameNet, CombatNet, AmigaNet. Actually it's only 11 nets.. LOL
