I had a go, but the next map was going to take over half an hour to
download.. for some reason I was only getting 5kbps. I wonder if it's
possible to pre-download the maps from somewhere?

The server throttles the bandwidth available to each client, which means that downloads remain horribly slow, so you can't hog the server bandwidth. The current map pack is available on the web page now.

Spectre might be able to tweak the server to serve up maps quicker.

lvlworld.com is where I get maps for quake 3. mapraider.com is another good one
    for maps of various games.

quaddicted.com is a good place for quake maps. Arcane Dimentions can be found there.

I did grab that zip so I have those maps in place and ready to go when we
    get around to it next.

It was important when bandwidth was limited not to saturate the server
with downloads but that is probably not the case today. If you could
tweak the server a bit it would be a good thing. If folks decide to come
and have a round with us it is likely that downloads will be needed if we happen to run a new map and I have plenty of suggestions for you.. :)

Hmm its probably still important really. Presumably the old values are enough to get the game data across the void. Increasing it won't improve game play markedly I expect. Although it would improve that map transfer performance. There are plenty of other things running on my "little" pipe now, so I'll see about boosting it a bit, but I think some limit will have to stay. The other aspect was faster connections were able to drown out slower links.

Already? We just got going :)
