• New (old) BBS: The Alien Mindbenders BBS

From marlow@21:3/103 to All on Mon Apr 13 20:51:19 2020
    Hi,

just dropping in here to say hello.

I used to run a BBS called "The Alien Mindbenders BBS" in southern Denmark in the 90s. It was online from 1992 to around 1997 running a combo of RA and FD. It was accessible initially at 9600 baud, the 14400, then a ZyXEL with 19200 was incorporated until the final upgrade to ISDN, so it could be accessed
using V90 56k or ISDN 64k. It was also accessible using packet radio via CB.

In the last few years, I've meant to relaunch it and with our recent move in January to a more permanent home for the next couple of years and a wee bit more time on my hands, that finally happened.

I'm based in the Republic of Ireland these days. The BBS is again available with V90 analogue 56k or ISDN 64k (X75 and V120), V110 GSM CSD, but also via telnet and ssh (the.alienmindbenders.net) on both IPv4 and IPv6. I still have
a lot of customisation and populating with content to do, so bear with me.

The BBS has been added to Fidonet on Friday (2:263/5) and fsxNet today (21:3/103).

I have a lot of content from the last 2 decades of demo coding events in Denmark and Ireland to upload. So that should be interesting enough.

Anyhow. Thanks for having me and thanks to Avon and Alterego to get me set up on fsxNet.

    Welcome aboard!

I, too, used RA + FD for a long time. Now switched to Mystic BBS for the time being.

    Best regards

    Hi,
your ssh client is too strict on ciphers, which is the default on more recent Linux installations.

Mystic BBS still uses an older crypt library. It crashes with the latest one. So the only way to connect using ssh is, that you might have to add those additional ciphers to what is allowed or use telnet ... which is ... well.

Probably mystic, probably cryptlib. Or maybe synchronet. Use syncterm to connect.

There's that, but there's also using the right tool for the job - a standard telnet client lacks some features common to BBSing, like inbuilt file transfers. :)

I first joined fidonet because a user on the BBS asked for it. I knew
basically what fidonet was but hadn't done it yet. I knew what a BBS was but had no idea about tossers and mailers.

I was in chat with a sysop and told him I was planning to join fidonet and he came over to the house and helped me get it all up and send in an
application. He was a great help and knew all the ropes and who I needed to contact. He initially set me up with FD and FMail. I eventually made my way
to Maximus & Squish. I still have a lot of respect for that combo. I ran
quite a long time with Telegard and Squish also. A great pairing.

I was already a serious BBS user before I became a sysop, and was active in several Fidonet echos, so I knew Fidonet was something I wanted on my BBS, and set it up very early in the piece. :)

As I had a slower modem, Bink was a godsend, especially as I started moving a lot of mail in both directions. The bidirectional Hydra protocol saved a LOT of time! But it only worked with other BBSs running Bink. :)
