I'm not sure this is just a conspiracy theory.. I've often heard of China restricting what their users can do online with their Great Firewall etc.. China has its own social networking sites (such as Weibo and others) because some of the common social network sites used in other countries are banned in China.

Believing that China is restricting their citizens from using the Internet outside of China is definately not tin-foil-hat territory. I am with you.
    That is pretty common knowledge.

They have their own social network services because the state allows them to, and the state also mines, analyses and digs through EVERYTHING that is written there. Write something critical about the state and you may have a visit from the cops pretty soon.

I've heard things like that can sometimes happen in the US too. Someone I knew
a long time ago once said he and a friend of his tried an experiment where they
used a couple pay phones to call each other and said a few key words, and gov't
officials in black cars arrived in the area fairly quickly.

That is somewhat disturbing, to put it mildly.
