• Poll - Stats in Echos

From Avon@21:1/101 to All on Wed Oct 28 01:30:13 2020
At the moment we have echomail traffic stats for the FSX echos posted once a week in fsxNet by the 1/100 HUB

At this time the stats (for example) FSX_GEN are posted in both FSX_GEN and
the BOT echo. The latter will now move the new to FSX_STA echo but I am wondering how folks feel about seeing the stat summary also in FSX_GEN?

The same thing happens across all echos, so if you're in FSX_MYS you will see
a weekly stat report that is also cross posted to the stats echo.

Should this continue or should stats stats be posted only to the stats echo from now on

    A) Yes - Keep it the same, I like to see stats for my echo weekly in the
echo I post in as well as all together in the stats echo (FSX_STA)

    B) No - Just posts the stats in the FSX_STA echo and leave it at that.

    What do you think?

I tend to agree. I think having it in the stats area is enough.

I'm going to go with B, I don't see the need to have the same post in different areas and having them in GEN may confuse others to start or continue to post automated msgs in GEN.

I would say just in FSX_STA. With not having all the messages being placed in one area, it will be easier for people to find them.

Easier to just delete the entire network. FSX can't justify this confusion.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the feedback. I'd say most comments ares pretty heavily weighted in favor of just keeping the stats stuff in a stats echo so that's how I will set things outputting from the 1/100 HUB for now.

For those of you who would have liked it to stay 'in echo' as well all I can say is the nice shiny FSX_STA is just two doors down on the left, knock three times and ask for Steve and he'll be able to show you a great deal on
    echomail stats reports :)

Yes, just found it so thought I'd add it in.

I think I'm done for now with it, will set it to dump out the stats each
week. It aggregates data across the month. The BOT echo should come down a
bit as numbers move over to the new echos etc.

    Work in progress...

great deal on echomail stats reports :)

Isn't it from Leisure Suite Larry or something?

I went to a metal club in 2001, and I'd forgotten my driver's license
in another wallet. I went to the door, used my Costco card at
    will-call to get my tickets.

The opening band was playing, and they were LOUD. The bouncer got in
my ear and yelled "I! D!". I said I didn't have one, and it was OK if
    I didn't drink".

Proceeded to walk into the club, then felt a meaty hand on my
shoulder, pulling me back. It was the bouncer. He approached again,
    and yelled,

    "WHO PLAYED THE BEAVER!"

    "JERRY MATHERS", I answered.

    He stamped my hand.

"NO TWENTY-YEAR OLD WOULD KNOW THAT. ENJOY THE SHOW!"

Oh, that reminds me -- there's a great documentary on Netflix (US) that spends some time with Ken & Roberta Williams on the history/foudning of Sierra Online. "High Score" - episode 3, if I'm not mistaken. Awesome doc on the "golden age" of people who made/make video games.

Off topic, I know. Back to Stats in Echos! :)

Bah, he was complaining over on Micronet threatening to delete the whole network there too.

Not complaining. I'm just saying it's difficult (For me) to add Subs to a network. Each Sysop has a different setup, password etc. It's a mess. It wouldn't be a problem if I got all my messages from the same hub. That's not going to happen. So I won't add the new areas to my FSX. No big deal.

How's life in the new country treating you?

Are they in lockdown again? I just saw some BBC coverage of the UK announcing more lockdowns for Britain etc... bummer stuff...

Have to say compared to what we did in New Zealand a lockdown does seem a little different in that schools will still be open and construction firms
will still run etc... we did have something like that at what we called level
3 for the construction stuff but it wasn't until we hit our level 2 restrictions about 6 ( or was it 8? I forget.) weeks into lockdown that our schools opened up.

How's life in the new country treating you?

It's weird to read that, since "old country" is how Europe is sometimes referred to in the US. (I say, "sometimes", because I don't think I've ever done so.)

But, anyway, it's gone fairly well. My job is slowly becoming something where
I have any idea on what's going on (now I have a clearer idea of the stuff I don't know). But I'm still very junior, and not close to being particularly useful.

Outside of the job, I've been struggling with getting a bank account, but finally did. And now am struggling to be able to pay for things through the bank account (because, e.g., setting things up with Paypal just isn't
    working).

And I did get to go up in a Ferris wheel and see the city from above.

Are they in lockdown again? I just saw some BBC coverage of the UK announcing more lockdowns for Britain etc... bummer stuff...

Yep. Well, soft lockdown starts on Monday. No more indoor dining (Which I was still horrified about -- even if my fewer-precautions mode, that was a red
line I had no interest in crossing).

But I'm still going into the office, and I wear masks more than most people there -- though policy just changed, and now people are expected to wear
masks whenever they're away from their desks.

I've been considering going to the movie theater, but have been too lazy to
    do so.

To be fair, I view going to the theater as being fairly safe, because I'd
wear my good mask (a sanding mask with a filter on the output, and a couple
of N95 filters on the inputs), and possibly goggles beside, and not eat while there.

And still socially distance, give other people the side eye, etc.

Have to say compared to what we did in New Zealand a lockdown does seem a little different in that schools will still be open and construction
firms will still run etc... we did have something like that at what we

Yeah. Though in New Zealand you were actively trying to stop the virus
spread. Most everywhere else is trying to keep it at a minimal level while keeping businesses open.

Anywhoo... hope you're enjoying time / work in your new locale :)

I think we try to have it both ways. Lockdown, but not really a lockdown. I fear this will fail miserably in Europe and even in Germany. I think it was also stupid to wait too long. New Zealand's strategy was much more straight forward. Eradicate SARS-2 feels more like winning. Our strategy is more like loosing again and again.

Same for me, I haven't been to any bar and restaurant since March.

I've gotten takeout a few times in Germany, which is significantly more than
I did in the US, though in part that's due to me going to a building for work.

My approach does seem to shift, even if I tend to be a bit more cautious than average, regardless of where I am.

Today is your last chance in November. From tomorrow they will be closed...

Yeah, I missed my chance, but aside from worrying that my 10 EUR will cause
the movie theaters to close, I'm okay with the decision. It was nice to sit inside, too, and chat with people in the US (we even did a Discord-based
    movie watching)

That should be safe enough ;). Is it comfortable to wear it indoors for some hours? For public transport and longer travels I usually use the simple medical mask (not N95). Much more comfortable than the cheap
    cloth masks.

Yes, pretty comfortable in most situations. It doesn't really work with exercise, though. But that's somewhat true of all masks.

But it's nice to have a fairly comfortable mask where air doesn't seem to
leak out, as it seems to with all the cloth and medical masks.

But I wore it for most of my 10-hour flight, including sleeping in it for
about 6 hours of that, and had no complaints, beyond my inability to talk to people through it.

Honestly, it's more comfortable than other things, because it's easy to get
    it adjusted fairly well.

I think it was also stupid to wait too long. New Zealand's strategy was much more straight forward. Eradicate SARS-2 feels more like winning.
Our strategy is more like loosing again and again.

Yeah. Seems more like a plan to limp along until there are vaccines, and hope that the vaccines work well enough to be able to go back to normal-ish.

But it kind of seems like New Zealand might have to continue cutting
themselves off from the rest of the world for a good long while, or have the virus become endemic.

But who knows? I do hope the world gets to explore the post-vaccine-available time pretty soon.
