NZ has boxing day too? That's cool.

I was talking to our (new) American counterparts earlier this week and mentioned Boxing Day and the line went silent. I had to explain that to us cannucks the 26th was a statutory holiday as well.

I always went in for work on the 26th over the years. (There's no
shortage of things to do anyway). But this year since the 26th
falls on a weekend and the 27th is a Sunday, a 25th/26th/27th break
    seems like a vacation.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense to me either. Especially when (in normal times) many of us need to travel for the holiday.
I've always had office jobs, and have always gotten Christmas Eve off since it was a company holiday. Then I would burn a few vacation days and take the time off between Xmas and New Years, which is a great way to maximize your time off while spending few vacation days. A few years I was lucky enough to work where they "closed" during that week.... even better!

Overtime pay can be sweet. Legally, it is time-and-a-half on regular
calendar days, and double-time on weekends and holidays - with a
minimum of 4 hours as well, I think.

Some employers can work around the minumum by only calling in the
persons for 3 hours, or substituting those days with equal time off
    at another time.

Reminds me of a time when I worked for a major military contractor.
For one of the projects the team of 6 engineers of which I was part
was split into pairs and further split into 3 shifts each, and
shifting a shift every 3 days! - inorder to maximize time for
compiling and access to the main computer equipment we were
developing and in order to have at least 3 days per week to use the manufacturing department (who operated on a regular day shift)
incase we needed mechanical adjustments to cables, harnesses or
    other fixtures.

Sadly, the shift-work was not considered overtime, but it did extend
between Nov - Jan one year. We could take Christmas day off, but we
we weren't allowed to "package" any accumulated holidays during that
time to escape the shifts. It totally sucked.

But it often surprised me that here in the US, we got 4 day
weekend for thanksgiving, but just the day of for Christmas.

Thanksgiving has links to the founding of America. Perhaps that is considered more important than Christmas and therefore "rewarded"
    with extended holidays.

Have been listening to an amazing Spotify Xmas playlist made by one of my wife's friends. Lots of obscure stuff on there that I've never heard of.

One song has been stuck in my brain... It's a soul song called "Santa Claus is a Black Man", released in 1973 as a single by Teddy Vann (music producer who went on to work with Luther Vandross).

It's basically a kind of homage to "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" but one of positive imagery for black kids. Gives me the feels when I hear it :)

    Cheers,

Silent Night has always been a favourite of mine, though I don't really listen to xmas music much these days.

I like a lot of Christmas songs, though the winter ones are rather silly here, as most Christmases are around 35C. This year was cooler at around 25C - a lovely day. I look for a mix of traditional (religious based, even though I'm not religious) and Australian takes on Christmas.

Some of the religious songs like "Mary's Boy Child", "Song of Joy" and the like are among my favourites. I do like to watch Carols by Candlelight on TV, which are held in Melbourne as a fundraiser every Christmas Eve. This year was different in that there was no live audience, DUE to COVID restrictions. Normally you get something like 30,000 people on the night.
