Haha that's putting a positive spin on it. :D

I've gotten to the age that looking for the silver lining beats counting my silver hairs. I know I'm over doing it lately, I came up with a silver lining to the pandemic.. no leader, regardless of how much of an a-hole they are, will ever start a nuclear war during the pandemic. So there's the silver lining.. the will be no nuke war during the pandemic, no one wants to be know as the a-hole who did that... LOL

Hmm, they do want to start economic and political wars though. :/ I'm hoping to get to Hong Kong in late 2022. I should be well and truly vaccinated by then (mid this year most likely), but political tensions, both between China and Hong Kong, as well as Australia and China are the biggest concerns now. Until 2020, it was pretty safe for an Australian to visit both Hong Kong and mainland China.

I do have to say that my fitness improved significantly during 2020. The pandemic gave me an opportunity to focus in a way most winters don't allow.

Hmm not good, well at brings up a wish/statment I made a while ago.. If everyone stayed home there's be little to no war.

Why can't we all get along or agree to disagree. No one has to 'win' because that means someone has to lose. So let's not even play that game.

Hmm, you're going the long way round. Trans Pacific would be more direct. ;) And life jackets are supplied. :) I've sone some flights over water, most notably Melbourne to USA - I've done the Pacific crossing myself. No big deal.
Probably to China it's not too bad for you, but coming here, you have to cross the ITCZ, near the equator, where there's frequently storms, which can add a few bumps along the way. Had that myself, but nothing major. Some nice cloud formations just before sunrise on the eastward trip, from a weak storm.

I knew it sounded "old/odd" when I wrote it but with hearing them called that for the last 50+ years, it just slipped out.. lol hey, I've learned from co-workers originally from NZ to not call a kiwi fruit, simply a "kiwi" because they may not be sure if I'm talking about the bird, the fruit, or the people. Just like we (Canadians) don't like to be called "Canucks" by Americans.. It's kinda like calling them "Yankee" or "Cracker"...

At the age of 53 I will unintentionally offend someone regardless of what I say because of how I was raised.. I'm damn happy when I learned you can call them "Brazil Nuts" compared to what they were called when I was 7-12... 'cause the other name can get you beaten up in some places in the US.

Actually, in medieval times, geese were used as guards, because they
can be very aggressive, so I'm not surprised.

A goose adopted my Aunt Ann when she had a farm in Alberta. If anyone
tried to get close to her the goose would chase them away. The goose
at least backed off when Ann said "Goose! It's okay". She never
trained it or fed it nor understood why goose chose to protect her.
I don't remember how many years it lived that way but it was enough
that most of the family had an encounter with it.

    No, Canadian Geese are dicks.

I used to run around Lake Merritt in Oakland a couple of times a week. Hundreds of migratory geese decided it was pretty good there and stopped migrating, and they'd block the path I was running on, and try a nip or two.

They'd chase kids, too - looks of sheer panic on the 5 year-old's face who thought the geese were cute.

Yeah, I can imagine that, and on top of that natural instinct, geese can be trained.

The ones I have run into in the US are mean. I stopped at a park by Lake Huron, on the Canadian side (it was called Lakeside Park, so I had to
stop). Anyway, I expected the geese to swarm me once I got my lunch out.
They did not. They didn't seem to care that I was there or that I was
    eating.

I wonder if the ones that get used to people (and attacking them) are ones
that have been fed alot by well meaning people while they are in the US.

There's always BC, at least the southwest part. I rarely see the temps drop below -10 in the winter accept for around 10 day a year in might get a bit colder.

It does get quite warm here in the summer, ~40C at the peak of summer.

Vancouver is nice. The temps don't often get warmer than ~25 in the summer and around 0C in the winter. It is wet much of the year though.

I wish we had somewhere tropical in Canada.

Canada has had several opportunities to annex Turks and Caicos over the
years, as far back as 1917 and as late as 2016. In 2016 there were concerns over "re-opening" the constitution to make them a full province. Nova Scotia offered to make them part of that province to avoid that conundrum, but then the whole thing just fizzled out yet again.

At this rate, I just don't think either side is really that serious in making it happen.

My first trip to Florida (work related) was wonderful. It was
during Jan-Apr, every 2 weeks for about 3 trips. On my last
trip, I extended my stay with unused vacation - a total of 5
weeks. I only encountered one threat of hurricane weather - but
I resided well within the interior in Orlando.

I was really cool to step off the non-stop flight from Montreal
to Orlando with just a light shirt. I regret that I didn't
follow-through to make arrangements to visit Nassau, or consider
taking the highway along the Keys.

But I drove to the east coast to Coco Beach, and to the west
    coast to Tampa.

I rented a laptop and called local BBSes. Would have been nice
to actually know some people, but one fellow where I worked
invited "us Canadians" to a house party to drink and watch
    "Earth Girls Are Easy".

Back to the weather.. Most of the time it was glorious.

I used to love work travel. I consulted for a client that moved from San Francisco to San Diego, and they kept me on during the transition. I flew
down to San Diego 3 weeks out of the month, out on Monday, back on Friday.

I was in Oakland, lived about 15 minutes from the airport. The flight was a little over an hour and if you missed the flight there was another every 90 minutes.

It's fun getting to know a place so well that getting there feels
    comfortable.

My first time there was the week after Christmas, and the rental car place upgraded me to a Mustang Convertible because they were out of subcompacts
and compacts and everything in between. Driving in San Diego in December
with the top down in 72 degree weather was unreal.

That was before 2001. I couldn't imagine enjoying it anywhere near as much now.

I've been to Florida once. It was in 1987. I mean it was a school band trip, so likely not ideal situation, but still, I wasn't much impressed. Wecdrove
on a bus and did some performances at schools. A day at Coco Beach, and 3 in Orlando. The only part I actually enjoyed was Epcot Center, as it was called then.

I've experienced humidity in Darwin. But here, 5% humidity is quite common, with temperatures over 40C (47.5 is the highest I've experienced, and around 46C at this location). BHiggest issues are:

    1. The uxtreme UV levels - UV index gets up to 12 at this latitude.

    2. 2. The vegetation here will go up in flames at the drop of a hat here under those conditions.

piss, we've had our toasty days this extended spring ;) A number of mid 30s and near 40s thats enough for me. Otherwise to many cold snacks are required to maintain equilibrium.

Not too many. Been planning a beach trip for months, but the odds of hitting a vaguely decent day down there have been abysmal. Up here, we've at least had runs of high 20s/low 30s (a far cry from the weeks of 35+ we normally get in January). Only one day had been identified - on a day I couldn't make it. :/

I used to have the perfect patio even though it is facing east, it had the railings that were just bars and I got plenty of daylight, but because of health risks.. they replace them with solid panel railings so I don't get 1/2 the sunlight and each year since my plants have suffered, am tempted to set up grow lights since they pay the electricity.

I'm the same way. I have plants throughout the house and have chosen ones that need little to no care. Just the occasional watering whenever I happen to remember.

My Mom on the otherhand just has to look at a plant and it will thrive. Two or three years ago we took a vacation and had my Mom cat-sit for us for the week. When we came back she has taken it upon herself to also take care of our plants. Since then all of our plants has exploded in size, especially
the polytail palm that has now outgrown its current pot which is now bulging on all sides.

We're going to have to invite her back to do that for us... ;)

if they are good we'll give them to Dad and you can type out
the recipe for your computer friend." (Dad is also diabetic)

I'm also working on a hot chocolate with
splenda, cocoa powder, salt, milk powder... still in progress, but I
have managed to make a microwaveable carmel corn. (not diabetic
friendly) margarine, brown sugar and popcorn.

Interesting. We've never tried that but we enjoy popcorn with
margarine and salt. (and I like a pinch of hot pepper flakes)

Aren't you gluten free types, gluttons for punishment when it comes to

I'm not GF. My wife is Celiac so I bake GF at the house to not
    contaminate my kitchen.

baking? Used to work with a coeliac, she'd constantly gripe that it
wasn't the same without wheat flour. She'd also try the I think it was

    It's not the same. ;)

2 week challenge they put out here every now and then, trying some
stuff with gluten to see how it went, I don't think she got beyond
about a week and a bit though.

Andrea knows 20 minutes later if she eats something with gluten.
It's not pleasent. My BIL once bought pasta from walmart in a
blue box and I didn't realzie it wasn't the glutino stuff (didn't
really look) and I thought I killed her.

Aren't you gluten free types, gluttons for punishment when it comes
    to baking?

A few years back I was having some stomach issues, the doctors weren't
much help. Going gluten free really seemed to makes things better. After about 2 or 3 years I was able to re-introduce gluten and I'm fine now.

During this time I was like your friend, I *really* missed bread but never
did find one that was a suitable replacement. After awhile I just went without.

I remember this one gluten free pizza I tried from a province-wide chain
we have here and it was HORRIBLE. They might as well have just melted some cheese onto the box it came in and threw some pepperoni on it, it probably would have been more edible than the crust they used. :/

There we a few recipies that I really did enjoy and they're in somewhat regular rotation even today. One was christmas stuffing, instead of using bread it's mushrooms & sage sauted with garlic, onions & red pepper flakes.
Of course the texture is different, but I found it quite delicious and the sage really brings it together as the stuffing my family made growing up always had sage in it.

The other is this chocolate quinoa cake... This one is amazing and surprisingly easy to make. Not only could I NOT tell this wasn't made with wheat flower, it's also super rich, so you don't want to take a big piece.

The recipe calls for almond milk & vegan "butter", I just used regular milk & butter & it comes out awesome. I still make this cake today, though I just use regular frosting:

It's super moist and very chocolaty, give it a try!

What I don't get is they have already told me I'm too blind to drive,
and sent me papers to say so, but am not considered blind enough to be considered disabled.

    That's strange for sure.

Well, stupid is ... as Government does...

That cake was like hard tack, I was able to gnaw on it for several
    days.

    Laugh that's crazy.

On the risk of sounding like Forrest Gump.. Mommy always said when it comes to cooking and baking, you fuXX it up you eat it. It's a hard rule especially if you burn something.
I will have to admit I've never made the same mistake twice.

Am looking to make diabetic chocolates using splenda, does
    Andrea have any suggestions,

I'm hoping the hot chocolate turns out.. I'm a bit of a chocoholic and am also Canadian and a huge fan of the hot chocolate that is sold in the Tim Horton's shops here.

margarine and salt. (and I like a pinch of hot pepper flakes)

I've always considered myself a "Food - Mad Scientist" I tend to mix things you may not think of mixing, with sometimes strange and sometimes bad results... here's one that was really good.. dollarstore tuna salad (kind with the tiny spoon and 4 crackers.) and pretzels. At first I was unsure how it would work.. but the salty of the pretzel and the fish of the tuna goes really well if you like fish.

Mind you, the same tuna salad with gummy bears, it a kinda sweet chewy tuna that goes on too long, and tuna and strawberries is not a great flavour.

And NEVER add canned mushrooms to homemade pea soup.. that was the one time I only ate a bowlful before tossing the entire batch.. somethings just were not meant to be mixed.

I'm sure you can figure something out. I'm a coffee addict so when at
    tim's I'm getting coffee. :)

Okay, that's different but not too different. Pretzel / saltine kind of
    in the same family.

Mind you, the same tuna salad with gummy bears, it a kinda sweet chewy tuna that goes on too long, and tuna and strawberries is not a great flavour.

That's something I would never try.

And NEVER add canned mushrooms to homemade pea soup.. that was the one time I only ate a bowlful before tossing the entire batch.. somethings just were not meant to be mixed.

I bet it was more the texture then the flavour. Although I'm not going
to try adding any mushroom to my pea soup. (I have a hambone in the
freezer just waiting on me to get off my ass and make it)
