From Avon@21:1/101 to All on Sun Mar 7 10:21:57 2021
    Hey folks.

The NET 1 HUB will be down a couple of times this month due to planned power cuts in my neighborhood. That means all my servers etc. running here at home will be switched off before I head to work and then restarted at the end of
the day when I get home.

I've got a couple of notified power cuts coming up this month the first this coming week on my Tuesday 9 March and the next a week or so later on my
    Tuesday 23 March.

So expect on those days NZ Local Time that 21:1/100 and my other servers will be down for around 10 hours each time.

    Best, Paul

Quick question while we're chatting do you wish to move from HOLD to CRASH traffic? So the HUB starts pushing packets etc. to your BinkP server as they arrive at 1/100 ?

Depending on what exactly you need

Lenovo do a good range on tiny desktop machines about the size of a hardback book with anything right up to an i7/16gb ram. Total overkill for a BBS but
if you want a good all-round home server as well as your bbs on then it might be worth a splash as you can get them from under 100.00 GBP on ebay

I have a mini desktop pc by beelink with 6gb ram and 128gb ssd drive for
149 new that I use as my daily driver debian linux box. The ssd is also replaceable if you end up needing more space.

Don't forget the venerable Raspberry Pi which can now boot off USB (and even ssd with extra hardware). I've got one on my home network with a 256gb USB drive.

I dunno if this is your budget, but Lenovo has some really nice package deals, around $400-$500, and the higher tiers even have a 1650 (or 1050, can't remember) video card in em! Pretty banging deal, for a mid-range that will last for some time to come....

My plan is to merge things down starting with some of the BBS stuff as I migrate stuff (slowly) over to this new Linux box I have set up. First step

I want to get a refurbished small form pc as my bbs computer.

I'm using a Lenovo m92p Tiny for my BBS.
I bought this computer some years ago at "lapstore.eu" as a refurbished device and we used it as my wife's desktop PC.
As she now got a new (used) computer, I chose to use it for my BBS instead
of a Raspberry Pi - because on the Lenovo, I can use dosemu :)

As it has more RAM, SSD and power than I might ever need for my BBS, it is really fine :)

Ahhh, I had thought you were saying that all your BBS stuff was on one small device upstairs - at any rate, I do love that older hardware can do so much of the majority of what I enjoy with computers...

I'm quickly getting into video editing, tho, and that is a different story.

Last, I'd like to mention for all the new sysOps that... its worthwhile to THINK about your /directory structure when starting a BBS. I didn't.

And now, like you I wanted to draw everything down to its simplest form, I want to separate my /file/areas/directorys and my /mystic... and its a b***h. :P Think that thru when you begin, however, and you'll find things a lot easier.

I want my /files on a separate HDD so that Mystic backups take up much less space and I deal with the /files in some other way. I'm quickly getting to 4TB - which isn't too nice to my TINY Raspberry Pi NAS. :P

    Cheers...

What got me into Synchronet and away from my old Maximus/dialup BBS was
being able to take a cast-off desktop PC that a client didn't want any more, putting a fresh copy of Windows on it, loading Synchronet, and having mail, mailing lists, a web server, FTP server, NNTP server, javascript and BAJA environments to tinker in, and a BBS - all on the same box.

That was on a triple-digit Celeron with 512 MB of RAM and an 80 gb drive.

That's the way I feel about the Raspberry Pi. When I first bought one many years ago I didn't have a particular plan for it.

I then loaded up RetroPi on it and next thing you know I'm parked on the
couch with a bluetooth controller playing SNES games. Tired of that game?
No prob, just press a few buttons & load up another game. Doesn't even have to be an SNES one, let's try Sonic the Hedgehog!

I'm way too easily amused with how something the size of a deck of cards can run these older 16 bit games, with wifi & bluetooth built it!

100W Solar panel and he can use the raspberry Pi. Or windmill (night), or
both together. Possibly just a good battery that could run the Pi that long then recharge before the next outage. A fair number of options if he's not using the old power hungry PCs.

That would do it, but pricey. Still this PCs would last through the outage. Still how do we get one to Avon in NZ? They are hard to get in the US where they tend to get built. Very few out there. The guy that owns the company
I work for has a Tesla, but no power wall. To get from his home to where I
work it takes a few hours on a quick charge which does exist along the way.
The cars have a listing of charge points so you can plan your way. Even they are pricey (~40K).
