You mean that you have to invite these people to come into your
house and they ask personal information in the guise of a
    survey?

I wouldn't participate in any survey unless I got paid for MY

Its probably none of my business, but you did post this on fsxNet.. is the stats department a government entity? Was it an appointment that you setup for some sort of reason or need?

I simply ask, because in the United States I would really be... not forthright and/or very concerned that a government agency showed up at my home without an appointment, reason or authority to take those two hours from me. That, and I wouldn't be answering any income and expense survery - but I didn't mean to make these few assumptions.. maybe you requested this interaction.

Anyway, I hope you got what you needed out of your couple hours - and not forced to doso by any government.

By law? I would still consider something like that quite
presumptuous on their part to insist my participation. What if
I have a home scenario that I am occupied with: home care for
elder, bed time for infant, house-painting, renos, dinner time,
private time, etc. ..or quite simply - "get off my property and

Perhaps it is described all legal, fine and dandy. But I don't
think a survey can force people to entertain strangers whom you
are not comfortable with into your house. At best, perhaps they
can only operate like a poll over the phone where you have the
    right to hang up.

Well I guess we're living in different countries with differing rules :)

It's a legal requirement to complete a Stats NZ survey. Under the Statistics Act 1975 anyone selected must complete the survey. Each person aged 15 or
over living at the address selected needs to take part.

Maybe a competitor gathering intelligence? If it's a phone
call, it could be anyone - legit or not.

It was probably legit, but in case it wasn't, I fed back a
bunch of made up information. :-)

Did you make it funny or somewhat ambiguous? That would be my
    choice.

I am just so fed up with the expectation of having to oblige and
give up MY time at $0 for THEIR survey. Meanwhile these
government types garnish nice life-time pensions for just a few
    years of work.

I get calls from people claiming to need to update their
"directories" with my business information. I could easily spend
upwards of 10 minutes or more on those if I let them. NO. If
someone is to call my shop, then I want that to be for an ORDER,
a SALE, or a PAYMENT. Otherwise, don't call me. My phone line
costs me over $100/mo to have. I don't pay that to answer
    surveys.

I'm still a bit annoyed about having to make an appointment if I
want to visit the bank. Usually, all I would need to do is make
my cash deposits (and I may ask for a supply of coins if I am
low). So.. I am expected to make an appointment, make my
deposit and THEN be charged a fee to make that deposit! The
least banks could do in this "unprecedented times" and
controlled appointments is to forgo the deposit fees. If I'm
expected to make compromises, why don't the banks do something
    too.

I haven't bothered to go to the bank at all since they started
the appointment thing. I have 2 or 3 small cheques that ought to
get deposited, but I have about 6 months before they go stale.
Maybe I'll risk dropping those off in the outside deposit box.
But I'm not putting hard cash in the bank at this time.

Yes.. I recall some "legality" attached to fulfilling surveys.
But there is no requirement to let them come into your house. I
participated in one survey right by the door MANY years ago.
Poor suckers were standing out in the rain. They made the

Yes.. I understand the value in that. But most of the time,
the services they provide are inadequate anyway. Taxes get
raised and other necessary programmes are eliminated just the
    same.

I think most of all that is just a ruse to give the appearance
    that their jobs are justified.

The data I gave will be aggregated and made anonymous. I'm

    Religion ___YES;
    Language at birth ___Whaaa!;

    Humour is not illegal.

They also run our nationwide census that occurs every few

Correction, the Census is done every 5 years in Canada. Last one was in 2016, the next one is two months away in May 2021.

The census is performed by the federal government and administered through Statistics Canada. The census form is mailed to almost every household in Canada (about 70%) who could fill that out and mail it back, or provide their answers online (since 2006). The remaining 30% would be asked to provide their answers to a "census enumerator" - so that random stranger that would take your answers, those those are usually done in more remote regions.

Most Canadians (75%) get the "short" census that just asks some basic demographic information while the remaining 25% get the "long form" census that goes into greater detail about your family history, race, religion, sexual orientation (as of 2001), among other categories.

If you don't get your census form in the mail this year, you can pick one up from any Canada Post.
