Have you tried (or do you have access to) the La Croix sparkling water canned drinks? They have a lot of "flavors" to choose from.

I haven't looked at La Croix specifically, but most of those kinds of
drinks have chemical sweeteners. No problem if you have only 1 or 2 per
day, but most of what you should be drinking is just plain water.

I remember when I gave up all pop and some of my co-workers said "why
don't you just buy diet?" I was not allowed to have caffine anymore
either, so I told them that if you take Coke and remove the caffeine and
sugar, all you have is dirty water (and it tastes that way). Why should
    I *pay* for that?

Some of them ended up not drinking their diet pops after that.

I need to research how they make them because, yeah, what the heck does 'essenced' mean? It's definitely not a sweetener because they don't
taste sweet and chemical sweteners I don't like. And it is zero
calories. It is like they just put a hint of the flavoring in them from whatever fruit name in on the can. Hmm...time to find out what it is.

if it's what i suspect, it's just artificial flavoring made by disolving something in an inconsequential amount of alcohol. for example, a concentrated mint flavoring could be made pretty easily.

where i used to work we had jugs of that flavoring stuff. intended for
beverage design. a whiff of that can be a shock ;)

in the final product it's barely there. but i guess for flavors like lemon in iced tea, it only really has to be barely there.

I keep getting tricked by those chemical sweeteners -- I think I'm buying flavored sparkling water, but, nope, aspertame or stevia or acesulfame or something.

I suppose it wouldn't be so bad if I could stand the taste of artificial sweeteners.

But to the point, La Croix is sparkling water with flavoring, and by "flavoring", I mean either "artificial flavors" or "natural flavors" (of
which the actual difference is minimal).

For as much impact as they have on the beverage, it's basically just
    carbonated water.

It's probably _still_ healthier to drink tap water, but that's probably
mostly about running carbonic acid over teeth.

If there's a flavor, there's a sweetener. Not many people know this, but
sugar and other sweet things, were used as a flavor enhancer for **long**
    time.

Another thing that people forget is that sweeteners like Splenda is made
from sugar. There's just no carbs left in what they take out. But it's **still** a chemical sweetener - just from a "natural" source.

This reminds me of a completely natural, if super-weird experience -- miracle fruit.

Miracle fruit (synsepalum dulcificum) is a berry that's a little bit sweet,
but has a fairly big seed, so it's kinda mediocre as an out-of-hand fruit.

It's also fairly difficult to grow, because it's hardy down to USDA zone 11, which basically means the Southern tip of Florida, in the US.

But you can grow it in a container. So I did, and managed to eventually grow
    a fruit.

So then I tried it, and then drank some lime juice afterward.

And that's where the "miracle" comes in, because the super-sour juice starts tasting sweet, as the miracle berry bits coat your tongue in such a way that sour becomes sweet.

And I was really excited at this description, but when I tried it, it did
turn things sweet, but _fake sugar_ sweet.

And suddenly it just didn't seem that interesting.

The plant is still pretty neat, though, and makes an excellent container
    plant.

I've had some tablets made out of that plant. It was more of a novelty
than anything else. "What does X taste like after having a tablet?" But
    that wore off pretty quick.

The plant is still pretty neat, though, and makes an excellent
    container plant.

That's neat. I never knew that. But I don't have a "green thumb".

I can usually keep the plant from dying when it's mature, but I've had no success growing something from seed.

If memory serves, the miracle fruit plant is _super_ hard to grow from seed.

But that's why you buy things that already have root balls.

In my case, I got tropical plants from various places, but favored
logees.com. Mostly because it's a container-growing place that's based in Connecticut, so they're well aware of the challenges of keeping tropical
    plants alive in non-tropical locales.

There's a localish business here called Flavour Makers. I don't know a lot ìabout them really, but a courier the dropped of "paint" to us, was carrying a ì20l/ ~5Gallon drum of orange. Drum was locked up tight no obvious leaks, you ìcould smell it clear into the store though. Can't verify, but word out of the ìdrivers mouth was its so concentrated if you tried it straight even a ìteaspoon it'd kill you.

Yeah, I'll take my Zerowater-filtered tap water any day - I live with really hard water and the filter makes a huge difference.

I think the only time water freaked me out was when I took my daughter to a birthday party and they had those little disposable water bottles for the kids. When I read the label, I saw "FLUORIDE INFUSED FOR DENTAL HEALTH" on
the bottle. Really? In bottled water?

I'm all for fluoride treatments at the dentist. Not at a kid's birthday
    party.

Laugh. I think they add it to the tap water too don't they? In any case
that's the water I drink. I called the city once when I noticed a weird
smell coming from the tap, they took me very seriously. I was quite
pleased with the level of service and that was in a shutdown / stay at
    home order.

Our tap water is good, but the best (not counting well water) was the
city water when we lived in Toronto.

    Eh. I'll disagree.

Fluoridation of tap water has been a positive, and is something that would
make tap water better than bottled water.

I assume they're not putting a huge amount in -- just enough that it's as
    good as tap water.

Maybe it really _is_ bottled tap water, where they just take a city supply and bottle it.

When I lived on the San Francisco peninsula, our tap water came from snow runoff in Yosemite, into a reservoir called Hetch Hetchy. It was some of the best tap water I'd had.

My family's cabin is supplied by snow run-off collected in a reservoir about
    a half-mile away. It's the best water I've drunk - bottled, tap,
    whathaveyou.
