    Hello

So I'm on my fourth for tonight. It's been an interesting day, so yeah, i
got a six pack to settle the nerves.

Probably not the best medicine, but it works ;P

Wife is watching doggies vs tigers on the tv (AFL game - her team is
    doggies).

Looks like my "backup" er "onlyup" drive is starting to fail. It's got
all my documents I've collected over the years. I have about 5tb of
stuff, and can't really afford another 5tb drive to back up the one I
    have, so it's kind of a not-backed-up-backup.

Oh well. I've copied about 2TB off of it, and I have the most important
stuff.. photos, old projects etc. I might be able to find space for the
rest of it over various hard drives, but I'm not sure I really care that
    much.

I'm 40 in may. tomorrow's the 1st, so i have 19 days left of being under
    40. gets one thinking about their own demise a little. I hope to be
remembered as someone who was friendly and approachable. Helpful when
asked. I hope. Maybe it's just the drama of other nets, but I hope others
don't think I'm a complete arse just because i'm painted that way by
    someone in particular.

Sorry that was a little dark I suppose. Probably just put too much stock
    in what others think.

Anyway, I'm going to get another beer and join my wife watching the footy.

    Andrew

Oh man, figure out a way! I've lost stuff like that before and have really regreted it. I'm sure I've mentioned it a million times, but look into unRAID. I just toss my old drives in a unRAID server and have used it for years without issue -- including rebuild/repairs from losing a drive (but without data loss due to parity). That won't help you get another 5TB drive of course, but it means you can throw smaller/older ones and get the same deal.

Nah, it's ok. I backed up the important stuff the other day, about 2TB,
the rest is just not important.

My documents and projects etc are backed up, but even those, the most
important ones (to me) are on GitLab anyway.

I turned 50 last year. Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but something about turning a "milestone" age during a pandemic seems to make
me think more than the others did. Or maybe it is simply because this milestone is 10 years older than the previous. :) You've always been

While I do know what this is in reference to, I don't think you have to worry. I, for one, will always think of you as friendly and approachable. You have helped me quite a few times, on different projects, and I greatly appreciate it.

I know I've mentioned this to you, but you are also one of the reasons I started getting into programming again. After seeing some of the great stuff you have been putting together, I was inspired to jump back in and start programming.

I may not be writing BBS programs, and Linux distros, but I hope to be, even a percentage of the programmer you are.

Keep up the great work, and remember, age is only a number. :)

I've got two motorcycles in the garage right now. Whenever you get on one, if you don't feel a little bit scared or nervous, don't even start it up. When you're a bit scared, you'll pay more attention to what you, and everyone else around you, is doing.

I just don't take them out much anymore, as I've had way too many close calls. A couple years ago, I took the bike to the gas station, which is about a mile and a half down the road from where I live. On the way there, I was almost hit twice. On the way back, there was another close call. People just don't pay attention to motorcycles, even with loud pipes. :)

Senior's discount for about 10 years in advance.. that's pretty
    good.

Yes, I have enjoyed it. :)

But isn't Wendy's food supposed to make you age faster on
    the inside? ;)

I hope not. Wendy's burgers are good, it doesn't matter which one you order. Their fries tend to be 50/50 though. If you get them hot out the frier they are OK but they go downhill fast.

I always leave Wendy's satisfied but fast food doesn't suit my lifestyle or budget so I don't eat out often.

I've generaly kept my hair pretty short, and I would wear a hat
most of the time. Only recently in the last 2 years I've let it
grow longer - and got my first senior's discount without asking.
I still have a handful of years before 65. But.. some younger
people have started to call me "Sir". :(

I still think of myself as a young man and am surprised when people call me Sir but that happens more and more.

on, at night and even during the daytime. Some of the new lights are painfully bright, too.

Or something quite common around here are people driving at night with
nothing but their daytime running lights on.

It USED to be that if your daytime running lights were on, they were a
reduced brightness and your dash lights weren't on. Now it seems your dash lights are always on and your daytime running lights are equal brightness to low beams. What DOESN'T get switched on are your tail lights if you're running only on daytime running lights.

So we have a BUNCH of people around here who are driving around w/ normal headlight brightness but no tail lights on at all...

You can't blame the driver for being confused as there isn't an indicator
that says your tail lights are off. I think this could have been designed a bit better.

I was even caught by this once. My car has an "auto" setting for headlights, so I leave it on auto all the time, and when it's dark the headlights switch "on" (again, same brightness as daytime running lights) which also turns on
my tail lights. When I brought it in for an oil change they switched it to "off" for some reason, but failed to mention that.

So here I am driving around at night with no tail lights on. Next thing I know I have a cop behind me with lights flashing & pulled me over. They were nice enough to let me know my tail lights were not on and let go without a ticket, so I imagine this is something they also see all the time.

PSA: Make sure your headlights are set to "On" at night, and don't drive around with your high beams on.

I drive a now 14yr old RAV4. The dashboard lights are OFF when
the daytime running-lights are (always) on. That should be a
good indicator to the driver that the tailights are OFF. Don't
most newer cars behave the same way?

PSA: Make sure your headlights are set to "On" at night, and

Don't forget the people that use highbeams and are driving
BEHIND you! When I can, I usually try to pull-over and let
those people pass.. then I catch up with them with MY highbeams
on! :D But, most of the time I behave myself and just pull
over to let them pass until they disappear out of sight.

There is some kind of new headlight that has a very annoying and uncomfortable light. I primarily avoid nighttime driving because
I don't want to encounter those. The light is a sickly blue/
    green combination.

Haha, people are usually surprised when they find out my age. :)

Here in Ontario we have the "Liquor Control Board of Ontario" or LCBO for short this is where you'd go to buy hard liquor or wine. We also have "The Beer Store" where you'd go to buy, you gussed it, beer. The LCBO is owned/operated by the province whereas The Beer Store is privately owned but regulated by the LCBO.

In more recent times the government has relaxed these monopolies and now allows the sale of single and 6 packs of beer & bottles of wine at grocery stores, though you still have to go to the LCBO for hard liquor.

Anyway, the whole reason I bring this up is all through my 30s I was ALWAYS asked for ID at the LCBO, like always. One time I even had my driver's license scrutinized so has to also show my health card (also issued by the province) and a credit card with my name on it. It felt good that they
    didn't *believe* I was over 19 (I think I was 30 or 31 at the time).

But since hitting 40 they've stopped asking all together. :(

Nevermind my other half who is 8 years older than me and STILL gets asked for ID. We were going through the line at the LCBO once, I was in front of him and didn't get asked for ID, he was right behind me and sure enough: "Sir,
I'm going to need to see some ID please." - I joked with the clerk: "Oh sure, you ask HIM for ID", she chuckled and then did a double take at his birthdate and congratulated him on his good genes. ;)

much over the past year, but it seems to me like people have gotten
    worse since the pandemic started.

There are people who aren't great drivers and are rusty, combined with speeders who are capitalizing on the lack of traffic to speed. Makes for a
bad combination. 50 in the slow lane, 95 in the fast lane.

I'd read that the Cannonball Run record was broken several times last summer during the lockdown. People do the run one-at-a-time now, It'd be
interesting to see a proper race again.

A recent winner had blocked off taillights and trim to make an AMG mercedes resemble a Honda Accord. Once you looked inside at the array of dash-mounted iPads, the ruse was broken.

Haha, people are usually surprised when they find out my age. :)

Here in Ontario we have the "Liquor Control Board of Ontario" or LCBO
for short this is where you'd go to buy hard liquor or wine. We also
have "The Beer Store" where you'd go to buy, you gussed it, beer. The LCBO is owned/operated by the province whereas The Beer Store is
privately owned but regulated by the LCBO.

Hmm, here we have "bottle shops", which are liquor stores, where we buy liquor.
Some are attached to pubs, others are owned by supermarket chains, and there's some specialist liquor retailers. Of course, it's all regulated by the government.

In more recent times the government has relaxed these monopolies and
now allows the sale of single and 6 packs of beer & bottles of wine at grocery stores, though you still have to go to the LCBO for hard
    liquor.

Here, liquor can't be sold in the same section as ordinary groceries, but many supermarkets do have a separate, but attached liquor store.

Anyway, the whole reason I bring this up is all through my 30s I was ALWAYS asked for ID at the LCBO, like always. One time I even had my driver's license scrutinized so has to also show my health card (also issued by the province) and a credit card with my name on it. It felt good that they didn't *believe* I was over 19 (I think I was 30 or 31
    at the time).

Oldest I got asked for ID was 28, when entering a gaming venue. Had a friend who was asked for ID when entering a nightclub at 35. He still looks quite young.

But since hitting 40 they've stopped asking all together. :(

Oh well, happens to all of us. :)

Nevermind my other half who is 8 years older than me and STILL gets
asked for ID. We were going through the line at the LCBO once, I was
in front of him and didn't get asked for ID, he was right behind me and sure enough: "Sir, I'm going to need to see some ID please." - I joked with the clerk: "Oh sure, you ask HIM for ID", she chuckled and then
did a double take at his birthdate and congratulated him on his good genes. ;)

Lucky him. ;) I've got too much grey now, but people do a double take when they see me in action. :)

Yeah, I've always thought 21 was rather excessive. In the US you can join
the military & vote at the age of 18. So they'll trust you to hold a gun & send you off to war, but no smoking or alcohol for you until 21...

Here in Canada the drinking/smoking age is 18 or 19 depending the province.

That being said, I remember an awful lot of friends smoking in high school before they turned 19. So while a minor cannot *purchase* tobacco it's not illegal for a minor to *possess* it, in Ontario at least. It looks like Nova Scotia & Alberta have laws against possession by minors.

If you parent(s)/guardian signs off, you can join younger.

Most of the time the location where you are at spells out what age you can drink/smoke. So you could be 25 but in a dry place and not allowed to drink because of local rules.

As for being trusted with a gun, most states allow you to hunt from around 12 years of age, and with a mentor much younger.

While the military may trust its people with guns, it is very controlled and ammunition even more so. Mess around brings big troubles even if nothing happens.

These same "youngsters" are in charge of far more lethal things than a few guns.

30 years ago, it was a little more flexible than that; I'm not sure if it
still is or not. When I was in the Army, the drinking age on-post was determined by the post commander. So as long as one stayed on post, one could drink, at the Enlisted Club for example, or buy alcohol at the PX. Drinking off-post, or being intoxicated off-post, were subject to the usual laws.

To be fair, in Wisconsin a child can go to a bar with their parents and

I think it might be a thing elsewhere in the US, too. Age limits tend to be squishy.

True, many places here have declared "dry" areas, where drinking alcohol is illegal outside licenced premises. Some remote Indigenous communities have banned alcohol altogether, because it's so harmful to them.

Wisconsin definitely was lagered in adjusting to the national rule which tied 5% of highway funding to raising drinking ages to 21 (which was a really bad way of doing this - a Pandora's box that we have never since shut).

Interesting some of Wisconsin's Biker Bars ended up keeping Class-B licenses because authorities refused to grant Class-A licenses. So they were
restricted to serving Beer only. Doubt any are still around, but is was an anomaly that persisted for a while.

Yes, I thought it was Wisconsin. The federal government will tie a lot
of things to highway funding if the state won't give into their way otherwise.

It was the same as the speed limit on the interstate highways. The federal gov't forced Wisconsin to raise their speed limit to 65, from 55, in order to receive federal funding.

Did Wisconsin need to be nudged to up some of their roads to 70 mph too?

Oh I wish Ontario would do this. The speed limit on most of our highways is either 90kph (55.9mph) or 100kph (62.1mph).

There are a few sections of highways here in Ontario where they're "experimenting" with a speed limit of 110kph (68.4mph), but these are just short stretches between Hamilton & Niagara Falls, Sarnia & London and Ottawa to the Quebec border.

I would venture to guess that most people on the major highways drive *at least* 120kph (74.6mph), if you actually drove 100kph you're liable to get honked at and one particular finger waved in your direction.

IIRC, back in time, they did the same thing to force some states to lower
their Speed Limit to the nationally-suggested 55, too.

I visited Canada in 2017. As I am a "furriner" that didn't want to be
banned from visiting again, I tried to adhere to the posted limits as best
as I could. On the Trans-Canadian, I was always quick to move over to the
far right when a passing lane opened up, and there were a lot of happy Canadians who were quick to get around me. :)

I also drove the London-Sarnia 110kph highway... I dunno if it is because I
am so used to reading my speed in mph but going 110kph seemed a lot faster
    than 68.4mph! I usually drive 70-75mph here. :)

I think that extra digit broke my brain somehow.

Probably. Isn't part of 41 now at 75?

Well, it's gonna be pretty hard to have Christmas beer if you drink it all now...I mean...the beer store is definitely going to be closed that day...

I'm trying to think what New Zealand folks are into food wise at the moment. Avocados are always popular as is cheese and fish. We like our Lamb and Beef but seemingly export all the good stuff abroad and what remains is sold at crazy prices to locals. That said supermarkets here are crazy expensive too compared to other parts of the world :(

I feeling like a wine and cheese right now, it's coming up 4.40pm on a Tuesday here, hot, around 28 celcius and I'm kinda done with the working day to be honest :)
