Well, the stars finally aligned and I'm looking forward to a day off next week. I am wondering if anyone has any good book recommendations?

One of my favorites is The Idea Factory by Jon Gertner. A great look at innovations that were led by Bell Labs with a lot of colorful commentary.

I enjoyed The Hardware Hacker by Bunnie Huang, even though I'm not in that world.

Great book. You may enjoy, "Where Wizards Stay Up Late", about
    the origins of the Internet.

Salus's "25 Years of Unix" is also excellent.

I recommended "Showstopper!" at work, and it was well-received.

Thanks tenser for the recommendations. Happy to say I've read Showstopper and really enjoyed the OS/2 and Windows NT development stories. I like computing and networking history, so I'll definitely give the other two a read.

Thanks Dr. What, I'll definitely add this one to the list. Enjoyed BBS's on my C64 as a kid but switched to Apple platforms around that timeframe so never got exposure to C128 and the Amiga.

Appreciate the recommendation GreenLFC. I was never good at math, and my eyes aren't good enough for microsoldering, but love learning about the hardware side of things. Will give this one a read!

Ah yes; indeed. Full titles are more useful than slang. :-)

    Dated, but really well-written.

Stoll now sells Klein bottles he makes online.

Just finishing up 25 years of Unix, this was a great recommendation Tenser.

I enjoyed the bit of continuity with Dave Cutler between him at DEC and his MS moves at Showstopper. He's such a character - with his axe to grind against Unix while at DEC, it makes sense why Bill Gates took such a liking to him and fought to bring him over.

It did inspire me to build an NNTP server with leafnode on NetBSD. Just like my old ISP net admin days. That was a fun distraction to see my posts on Google Groups. Made for a fun few days off.

For books with a cyber/technology/hacking angle this collection
    is pretty good:

    https://icdt.osu.edu/cybercanon

Most are non-fiction, but there are some novels in the mix.

You can narrow down the most recent recommendations by year if
you select "2021" in the side bar control panel.
