• Downsizing

From apam@21:1/125 to All on Sat Jun 1 15:56:20 2019
    Hi guys

I have decided to do some downsizing. This is what I plan to do:

    * Move git repos to gitlab
    * Shut down HappyNetX (MagiNet)
    * Shut down Titan BBS / Titan Website
    * Replace Magicka BBS website with simple static site pointing to repos
    * Shut down attempts at wikis.
    * Possibly Shut down The Fat Sandwich

I have about a month to do this before my next server bill, so will be
doing it slowly. I still want to run a BBS, and I still plan on working
on magicka, however it's costing me too much per month, for very little
    gain.

Discussion can happen on FSX_MAG, no need for HappyNetX really, and it's
    just not getting used.

I plan on giving up my dedicated server and moving to a $5 VPS for
running the static magicka site and my BBS. Moving the fat sandwich isn't exactly easy and I'd kind of like a fresh start, but will wait and see.

    Afternoon to you :)

Can you let me know when you do so I can close the gateway and remove Titan from the nodelist - cheers..

    * Replace Magicka BBS website with simple static site pointing to repos

I'd be interested in what you end up using to create that.

    * Shut down attempts at wikis.

Feel free to use the fsxNet one for content if you want to.

    * Possibly Shut down The Fat Sandwich

OK lemme know also if/when re nodelist.

I can appreciate this I'm also looking at domain name hosting vs costs at the moment too.. posted about that over in fsx_gen

Is the developing also stopping? or just the site?

If you find a "good" solution for a 5$ VPS, send me a msg. :) i am also
    looking for one.

Totally understandable... i think you did the right moves. :)

What's your definition of 'good'? Both Linode and DigitalOcean have fairly equivalent $5 VPSes.

Just the site and the test bbs, although I haven't done very much
    developing lately.

I went with vultr this time, seem to be pretty good, slightly more
    options than digital ocean had.

Understandable. I've made economic decisions, sometimes hard ones. This is the reason I don't run a server farm, and my local "server" systems are Pi based systems and the occasional netbook.

Discussion can happen on FSX_MAG, no need for HappyNetX really, and

True, though I might setup a MagNet gateway to VKRadio, because I can then. :)

That works. VPSs are an economical means of getting some server hosting.

hmmm... fair support, easy config., being online 24/7 with no network errors etc. Also... many of the cheap servers, offer a first cheap time period and then to continue, you have to pay a higher price... and that stuff. :)

Fair enough... beyond the $5/mo. bit, I can recommend both of my above suggestions. I don't think I've had to ask DO for support on anything, but when
I've had to contact Linode in the past, they've been pretty darn good.

The $5 offering is a newer inexpensive offering, at least on the Linode side. A
few years ago when I started using them, $10/mo. was the minimum.

So, there's been no bait/switch offer from them at all, and in fact both have upped the resources for what you pay for in the past few years. I guess my experience has been nothing but great - stick around and you wind up getting more for the same money.
