• Potentially new Sysop here

From calcmandan@21:1/137 to All on Mon Aug 12 05:19:08 2019
    Hello folks,

I am currently planning on launching my own bbs and I'm moving more and more toward Mystic. The environment will be on either a raspberry PI or a retired corporate workstation. Looking to see which solution will be least expensive.

I have recently returned to the BBS world after a number of year absence. The board I currently call home is Digital Distortion BBS and I was delighted to see it still up and running a few weeks back.

In the 90s, I was co-sysop for two bbs's in my local area. I had built a strong friendship with the sysops throughout that decade from using their boards, donating money toward expenses and attending SAMUPT (Sacramento Area Modem Users Party Thingy) gatherings. It was usually a nerdy collective of all stripes at a park designated by the sysop organizing the party. My last party had seven sysops and about thirty users.

    What fun we had.

Both boards I assisted were utilizing Tribbs.

Anyhoo, I've been reverting my habits back to sane levels and bbs'ing seems to fit my lifestyle just dandy.

I still live in the Sacramento region and still maintain contact with a few old sysop friends. One of them eagerly awaits initial install so he can assist launching the board. There are many details to work out including theme and art

    It's going to be enjoyable.

    Hello folks,

    Hi there Daniel.

Thanks for taking the time to post here and welcome back to the scene :)

Dunno about the latter but your options span Pi, Linux, Windows and OSX. I
run a mix of Windows stuff mostly but also have a Pi and play with that.
There are a bunch of guys who run various versions of Linux also that you can chat with.

Welcome back, yep there's a slow but steady resurgence going on as some
return to the scene and others opt to set up to find out what it is/was all about.

How cool is that. I confess I never made it to many of those kinds of parties here in New Zealand but did attend some gatherings and meet some sysops face
to face over the years. It was a good way to socialise back then.

Both boards I assisted were utilizing Tribbs.

I never used this. Used Renegade, played with Waffle, also RA ...

Well just have fun and do it for you. Don't get hopes up for tons of callers
as most who set up are sysops running it for themselves. But if you are doing to have fun for yourself and others do login and use the BBS all the better.

    Best, Paul
