Since the source code is open to anyone, will there be ppl out there that will be making their own distributions or flavours of Synchronet like they do with Linux?

They *could*, but whether they *will* is not really a question he can answer.

Synchronet has been open for a long time, and nothing much like that has happened yet. Why now? There have been forks and derivative works, but nothing that really went anywhere interesting.

I'm not sure what a "distribution" would look like, apart from being a rollup of some person's preferred customizations. What do you mean?

It's been "open to anyone" for over two decades...

It would be interesting to see someone’s direction toward such a venture though.

It would be interesting to see someone's direction toward such a venture though.

There are other BBS packages out there, Those would be examples of someone else's direction.

Mystic, MBSE, Enigma, Citadel (although this evolved more to "groupware" now), WWIV.. Magica was actively developed up until a couple weeks ago when the guy took his page down. (although he apparently created a new QWK reader called "Titan")

Linux is an operating system, it makes sense that there's distributions for that. Synchronet is a service, or a suite of services. repackaging something like that under a different name would just be a dick move.

And a lot of the things that differentiate one Linux distro from another aren't concepts that easily map over to a BBS package.

A distro here would probably just be somebody's idea of a good default configuration, possibly with some services removed or disabled, maybe with ... text.dat altered and some different "graphics"?

I can only think of one crazy thing I might do that's remotely similar to this, but it'd be a huge pain and I wouldn't want to be its sole maintainer.
