    How about auto-quoting on ecweb?

To expand on my previous statement ...

When replying in a textmode session (eg. via telnet), one normally opts into quoting the parent message. Then you choose which lines to quote. The idea being to only quote stuff that's relevant to your reply.

On the web, it'd be annoying to emulate the "choose which lines you want to quote" method. The easy alternative would be to auto-quote the entire parent message, and hope that people will trim out any text that isn't related to their response.

The problem is that by default, a reply from the web would include the entire body of the parent message. Unless the replier trims it, it will all be posted. That's a bad default. I know that lots of people would *not* trim the quoted text; I've seen it happen elsewhere.

If I make you click a button to quote, you're choosing to quote, and it's less likely to generate a lot of noise and extra text in reply messages. There's also some hope that you clicked the quote button because you understand what it means and how to use it.

The potential downside is much worse than the inconvenience you feel at having to jab your finger at your iPad's screen an extra time once in a while.

I hope you enjoyed this quickie.

I got a quickie saying there was a new Version of Synchronet and it got
me all pumped up all over again.

It reminds me of the joke where these 2 guys went into a truck stop restaurant. A rather good looking waitress walks up to their table, and
    asks for their order.

The first one says he wants a cheeseburger, and the second one wants
    a quickie.

Annoyed, the waitress replied "Sir, this may be a truck stop diner, but
I'll have you know that we won't tolerate that kind of talk here. So, I'll
be back in a few minutes, and we'll try again".

So, she comes back a few minutes later, and again, the responses are the
same (a cheeseburger and a quickie). Angered, the waitress hauls off, and
slaps "the quickie wanting customer" so hard that it knocks him out of
the booth onto the floor, as she storms off.

A customer in the next table responds "Uh...that's pronounced quiche".

As a side note, can you possibly change your taglines?? Use of the same
one each time makes it looks like you're using a canned template for your messages. While I'm using MultiMail (64-bit) under Windows 10, I am using
a different tagline for each message.

Is the weather in Sync now easy to setup in 3.18b?

It depends on what app your using. Apparently, SyncWx is
no longer being updated for 2 reasons...the original author
abandoned it...and WeatherUnderground no longer offers "free
weather API" deals. I ran into the same problem with a ham

That one is now using an API from openweather -- but I

That was the case when BBS's where dial-up years ago. It makes you look

If one is that lazy, wanting everything to be done for them on the BBS,

Yep, and it still happens, even with textmode users.

It's a bit of a tough choice. We definitely want people to quote a message that they're replying to, but we don't want them to quote too much of it. I'm not sure what the best approach would be, but I'm fairly certain that auto-quoting the entire message isn't the way to go.

For a web interface, I wonder if a modal dialog could be used to allow users to choose lines from the message to quote. I'm picturing something that would work similarly to a text-mode message editor, using the arrow keys and enter to let the user select lines from the message, but I'm not sure if that would be doable on a web interface.

It *could*, but I fear that'd come across a bit clunky on the web.

Another problem is "lines" aren't so much a thing there, but paragraphs are. I often quote only a part of a paragraph, so I'd still need to trim down the quotes a bit.

On the other hand, it's pretty easy to select and delete some of the quoted text to trim things down - if you're using a mouse and keyboard. If you're using a touchscreen, maybe not so much (but that's your problem).

I also modify the subject if the content of the reply has changed.

That gets ignored on the web, for the most part. Messages are sorted into threads, and though you may change the subject line, if your message is in reply to another one, it belongs to the same thread. (With exceptions, depending on the integrity of the threading data.)

Unless I were to display the subject alongside every message (or when it changes) there isn't a "clean" way to show this sort of thing. Would produce a lot of visual clutter in a web page.

    Jon,

    Yeah. That's right. A quickie.

And what did you mean by a "quickie"?

    A fast slowie. <G>

    I guess that's pronounce coleslaw. :)

Cole's Law is thinly sliced cabbage. <G>

But, that reminds me of the joke, where these 2 people are in New Orleans, but they disagreed on the pronounciation...is it "New Ore Leans", "Nawlins", "New Ore Lee Anns", etc.

So, they decided to go into a fast food restaurant, and ask the cashier
where they were right now (meaning the city), and for them to speak slowly.

The cashier replied "Burr Gurr King". <G>

Since I worked for them for 5 years forty years ago, this hits home. :)

No wonder no one likes you here on Dove-Net. With an attitude like that, that will only get you on a twitlist.
