Who do we blame for that? Immigrants? Automation? Corporate greed?

The availability of #1 on your list helps corporations which are bent on #3.

There is a well-known chicken processor here in the states that started
opening up plants in the South and hiring illegal immigrants. They were basically hiring them because they could pay them less than the natives.
They eventually got in trouble for that at one of their plants and had to
    stop.

The little city in SE KY where they opened a plant was overrun by illegal immigrants. After the company got in trouble, they had to let many of the immigrants go. Now you rarely see them in the town. The company had to
hire locals. I don't know if they pay them any better or not because the
ones actually willing to do the work really needed the jobs.

Thing is, if we "evolve" from capitalism to whatever is next on the "progressive" scale, we will likely never evolve into anything resembling
those European countries that you laud praise on. We will still be run by
the same politicians who are still being paid for by the same corporations.
It will likely be a lot more totalitarian as they try to keep us all in
line. Intrusion into our daily lives will be the name of the game.

Remember, Obama had a chance to repeal the intrusive policies of the Patriot Act and did not. The government continued their practices of spying on,
and collecting information about, its citizens.

You may be willing to give up all of your freedoms to have the government
take care of you. To be honest, I think it is sad that you do not have somewhere to go where you can have that happen for you while leaving the
rest of us with our horrible freedom. Maybe in a few years, California or
New York or the Chicago area will become enough of a nannytopia that
those who value handouts over freedom can migrate to them.
