From Weatherman@VERT/TLCBBS to ALL on Fri Mar 21 16:05:00 2008
Just picked up this past weekend and first fired last night, a Remington
540X. Position stock, shortened bull barrel. Thought it might do decent
on our Tuesday night benchrest shoots. Once I got it sighted in, I put a
five round group all scoring 10's in a 25 yard benchrest target (the
one with the 1mm dot for a bull). I then proceeded to fill the rest of the sheet with 10's and x's. The 10's came mostly from using the Canjar
trigger in conventional mode. Once I set the trigger and used it that way, almost everything was an x. Only downside is that the darned gun is too
heavy to shoot in Sporter class, so I'll have to hang with the Heavy Varminters.

I figure a good buy at $350 for rifle AND 6-24X scope.

Looking forward to the warmer weather, where the shoots are outdoors at 50 yards. Also do centerfire offhand shoots when we get outdoors. Have a
Ruger Ranch Rifle that I want to see try to compete. I'm told that if I
can shoot a 1/2 inch group with that at 50 yards I'll be good to go. As I
have yet to get this out and do any real shooting with it, have no idea
    what it'll do.

Anyway... who else around here is into or thinking about benchresting?

Too heavy by how much? Can you lighten the furniture?

Too heavy by about 2 pounds. About the only way I can lighten it that much is by changing the stock. I suppose I could try to find a composite stock for it...

    Stock == furniture. :-)

Heh heh.. caught me over-thinking it... Just finished a discussion with a fellow shooter here about muskets, and the like, and in that respect, "furniture" refers to the fittings and accessories (brass or iron plates that hold the cock, the flash pan, etc.) on the stock... Yeah, it's a heavy stock alright, could lose a pound or two by going to composite and dropping the adjustable butt plate... It'

It'd be a shame though, as the previous owner did have it glass bedded, and as it stands shoots damned nice...

Only suggested it as a last-ditched way to reduce weight to meet
competition specs. Obviously, less than desirable from an asthetic PoV.

Understood... Can still use it on Varmiter night, and once we move
outside, any edge the heavier, longer barreled guns will be significantly mitigated. May just hold on to it just the way it is, and look for a
    workable Sporter next year...
