International Amateur Radio Union (IARU[1]) President Timothy Ellam, VE6SH/G4HUA, has been nominated for "Canadian Lawyer's Top 25 Most Influential" recognition in Canadian Lawyer magazine's annual contest, Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC) has reported[2]. Based on votes from readers, the magazine will pick the top five attorneys and judges in five categories - corporate commercial; human rights, advocacy, and criminal; changemakers; government/non-profit associations, and in-house counsel. Ellam was nominated in the "changemakers" category, in recognition of his volunteer efforts in support of Amateur Radio in Canada and internationally - above and beyond his law career.

The nomination cited Ellam's work through the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), addressing communications for disaster relief. He is a founding advisory board member of the ITU Smart Sustainable Development Model. Ellam travels frequently and spoke on this topic at the 2nd Global Forum on Emergency Telecommunications (GET-2016) in Kuwait. Ellam heads the Volunteers in Emergency Networking Group, which will publish its initial report later this year. The list of nominees was developed by an editorial panel and through suggestions from readers and past honorees.

Ellam led the IARU's efforts aimed at securing favorable outcomes for Amateur Radio during World Radiocommunication Conference 2015. He has acted on a number of telecommunication matters and has handled Amateur Radio cases in the Federal Court of Canada and several development appeal boards and is the co-author of Dispute Resolution in the Telecommunications Sector, published by the ITU and the World Bank. He's also a contributing author to Antenna Zoning for the Radio Amateur, by Fred Hopengarten, K1VR. Licensed since 1977, Ellam served previously as RAC legal counsel and has been IARU President since 2009.

Ellam also is a solicitor advocate in the Law Society of England and Wales and holds Rights of Audience in the Higher Courts in that jurisdiction. He also holds the designation Fellow in International Legal Practice granted by the International Bar Association and the College of Law of England and Wales, the first Canadian to be awarded this designation. He is an elected Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and in 2014 was appointed Queen's Counsel.
