I suspect any version of ubuntu would be ok. What errors are you seeing?

ouch, I will be doing this soon as well to Ubuntu from Windows. Just have to find the time to backup everything and start the process.

It would be helpful to see the errors you're getting from gmake/make.

    1. This is the wrong message area for Synchronet support questions (see http://wiki.synchro.net/howto:support for details).

    2. That "command not found" is likely the culprit. It looks like maybe you're trying to use 'sudo' but you don't have that installed or availble to the curretn user. Without being root/superuser, the subsequent directory creations fail (e.g. "Permission denied").

On my box gmake is a symlink to make. I can use either one.

Are you following the instructions at..

    http:wiki.synchro.net/install:nix ?

That is how I got up and running. What happens when you run make? I started with the quick installation from CVS, downloaded the GNUMakefile and ran "make install SYMLINK=1 RELEASE=1". That downloaded and built everything, I just needed to start my configuration after that.

mkdir: cannot create directory æ../../src/../3rdp/srcÆ: Permission denied

It looks like a permissions problem.. Make sure that the user account you're using to build Synchronet has access to the directory tree you're in - The owner of the directory or read/write/access permissions need to allow access.

It would help us help you if you posted specifically what errors you're getting. Synchronet isn't terribly picky, so it should run on just about any modern Linux distro.

You must be using the latest CVS version. I also got the "recipe for target 'js' failed" error with the latest CVS code whereas I hadn't been getting that before. I'm not sure about how to fix that. I'm also not sure about the "command not found" error. Is it referring to "sudo" or "cd"? If it's calling sudo, you may not have sudo installed. Just su-ing to root should fix it, but you shouldn't need to be root at all. As for "permission denied", you must not have write permission in the directory you're working in. I may not be very helpful at the moment, but, except for the js error, it just looks like a permissions problem.
