I've started looking into Android development, and the Android SDK is all based on Java - I'm not confident there would be an easy way to compile & run Synchronet on an Android platform.

err, android devices are a linux os running a java virtual machine for the GUI. I would just be wanting to run it as a service for now. yeah thou for the "desktop" programs those would need to be rewritten in java. hmm, my coffee mud would work great in android thou. it's all java. just enable the server mode in the droid os and compile the bbs like you would run it as a service, without the GUI programs. hmm, you could also make GTK versions of other bbs programs and put gtk on your droid device. if you have any droid questions, feel free to email me at stbenedictmission@gmail.com
also, look on wiki for what android is.
also, to see the droid APK files, open them in zip, the are zip file with scripts to tell the system how to install it. and you can see how the apks are laid out.

It's possible to write native code for Android via the Native Development
Kit (NDK), but it's mostly intended for writing parts of an application
which cannot so easily be done through the runtime.

I would think that Java stuff would port easily. In fact, I fooled with a
UPnP library in Java which worked essentially out of the box on Android. Anything using the console or AWT/Swing/whatever would likely have to be adapted to use the UI classes provided by the Android SDK.
