• ANZAC Day

From Ward Dossche@2:292/854 to All on Fri Apr 26 03:33:20 2019
    It's ANZAC-day today.

All day long celebrations and ceremonies in Belgium started with a sunrise remembrance at 6.00am at Buttes New British Cemetary (Polygoonbos).

Breakfast was offered by the local town.

Then a remembrance ceremony followed at 9.15am at Tyne Cot Cemetary in Passchendaele where probably the most bloody battle ever in all human history was fought.

A monument honouring all the Maori soldiers that fell was unveiled.

On ANZAC-day everywhere in the world the sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand troops are remembered during WW1. On this symbolic day the "Australia and New Zealand Army Corps" entered the war with the landings at Gallipoli.

The acronym ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, whose soldiers were known as Anzacs.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

WW1 runs high in this family and the killing area of Flanders Fields is just an
hour's drive away. But I think I will be the last generation in my
    family ...

The association with the region and the grattude of the peoples is a two-way relationship. We white folks here are 'displaced' Europeans, after all.

    Cheers,
    Paul.
