Sorry, I tend to disagree. I tried it again, a few years ago, after a pause
of sone 40 years. My problem was probably, that I was stiff and afraid
to fall. I did manage to get forward.

That was on speed skates ,I would not dare to try hockey skates now. It is
almost 60 years since I used those.

It's not the fall that worried me but the breaking of the ankle on the way down, which is exactly what happened to me the 5th time on the ice while learning to skate. It was the first time I had actually fallen despite many rather flamboyant attempts to do so, and when I did...I did it in style.
Ankle surgery, 6 weeks off my feet, months of rehab and it still hurts and
gets swollen to this day, some 18 years later...yeah be very afraid.

That said, my son started taking hockey lessons and he's really enjoying it.
I just wish I had the balls to don a pair of skates and join him on the ice. --- SBBSecho 3.06-Linux

Until I discovered long distance skating. It's really wonderful to skate between islands and on the blank sea ice.

It's a pity that we can do it so seldom. Either there is too much snow

We have a number of rinks in this area, some are near-by (about 10 minutes drive) some about an hour away... It is very rural here, but if you want to go

Soon I was able to get long-distance skates to fit under my skiing boots and was able to go skating longer distances.

I have seen those onece, quite neat.

We have a few Icehockey teams, but the main emphasis is on speedskating and
    long distance skating.

Winters where canals and lakes are frozen over, are now few and far apart,
(how can that be without a change in climate).

But when every thing is frozen over lots of trips are organised with
lengths between 20 and 60 Km.

Marathon skating, noeadays, is done ether on one of the many 400meter
ovals. There is a special venue organised in Austria (tirol) in the
Weissensee. I beleive they make a track of about 10Km and you have to go
around 20 times to match the distance of a famous race of 200 Km.

This most famous race (Elf steden tocht) is along eleven Cities in the
Province of Friesland. The last five were in 1956, 1963, 1985, 1986 and 1997

The event attracts thousands of participants and spectators, so the ice has
to be reals strong over the fulle length of the tratectory.

Notice, that the race will be held is usually geven less than a week in
inadvance, but whenever there are a few days of frost, people start talking
about the possibility of the race being held.

This year a long distance swimmer tried to swim the trajectory in one go.
He had to stop after 163 Km, With this event he collected 3.5 Million Euro's
    to fund additional cancer research.

Perhaps you need to be specific stating that only skaters members of the skating association are allowed to participate, that there are a limited number
of spots (18.000?), that you need to renew your membership every year or lose your spot in the pecking order.

Many of these guys have now been paying for 20 years with the possibility it will never happen again...

To keep the ice covered football fields free from snow is done with wide
snow showels or if much with rotary snowplow.

The sea ice is hopefully kept clear from snow by wind.

I suppose that's true, but I like to train myself in most things. We didn't even have an ice skating rink in the New Orleans area until 30 years ago. That would have been a 55 mile drive one-way.
