Here here hockey defaults to fieldhockey.
I might have been able to do that when younger, but just standing up
on ice skates would have been a challenge.

Well, once learned it's like cycling (Biking), once learned it's there.

Sorry, I tend to disagree. I tried it again, a few years ago, after a pause
of sone 40 years. My problem was probably, that I was stiff and afraid
to fall. I did manage to get forward.

Have a good night,
That's good to know, otherwise I'd have been scared to death, As a child practicing on my own, it took weeks to stand up on roller skates.

I tried ice skates once ... it wasn't a great succes.
Never was on wheels ... don't tell Steven.

It is, that's true. I have always really enjoyed skating :)

I did a lot of skating when I was a youngster. Then after moving here to
the ┼land Islands I had to take a break becau se there were only hockey
rinks to skate on.
Until I discovered long distance skating. It's really wonderful to skate between islands and on the blank sea ice.
It's a pity that we can do it so seldom. Either there is too much snow
or frozen sleet/slash on the ice but today we also have a few icecovered football grounds/fields to skate on.
Soon I was able to get long-distance skates to fit under my skiing boots and was able to go skating longer distances.
The event attracts thousands of participants and spectators, so the ice
has to be reals strong over the fulle length of the tratectory.

We have a number of rinks in this area, some are near-by (about 10
minutes drive) some about an hour away... It is very rural here,
but if you want to go to a rink at least they are here - which is
good. :)

That is not something I've ever experienced, but it sounds really different, that's for sure :) Given the nature of the area you
lived in, I can understand that you would have been able to take
advantage of skating in places like that back then.
Winds might keep those fields clear of snow at least I expect...

Depends on how often you practice. It took some time for me too
before I mastered the 'art of skating'.
It was even more difficult because the skates were fastened under
normal winter boots without any extra support for the ankles.
Have a nice day,

Ankle support on skates was non existent. I don't believe I would
have tried ice skates. For me, that's a spectator sport.
We don't have winter boots here. (-:

Good morning Roger,
The reason why you fall is that your ankles are too weak. Once
trained the muscles become stronger.

Whatever you call them, army boots are very similar, reaching up
above your ankles. I guess so called terrain boots are also very
similar.
Have a nice day,
