• Image BBS for The C64..

From Bucko@21:4/131 to All on Thu Dec 27 01:54:14 2018
Hey folks, just a bit of info before I finish this, back in the late 80's and early 90's one of the most popular BBS programs for the C64 was Image BBS
v1.0 to v1.2. In 1991 work began on an update to 2.0, unfortunately 1 of the programmers died suddenly, and the other programmer grew up (what 18 year old kid wants to program a C64 forever?) So the software sat dormant for years,
in 1996 one of the founders of Image BBS contacted me and asked if I would
help finish the software so it could be released. (I had stopped running a Commodore 64 BBS in 1993 and had moved on to Amiga then PC boards) I said
sure so I broke my Commodore stuff out, after about 6 months of non-stop programming, I lost my Lt Kernal HD, first the power supply went bad then both of the HD's I had for it went bad, I gave it up. Programming went on for
a couple more years when the leader of the programmers suddenly passed on.
Well 19 years later I found my backups and gave them to a friend in Florida
who started work on them again. He got the program very stable and runs
pretty cleanly. I in turn got back into it except I was running with an Emulator WinVice, contrary to popular belief you can run a BBS in WinVice
with TCPSER OR BBS Server v1.4 as the emulated modem, I do it! X-Tec and I
just jointly released 2 items the 3.1 update to v2.0 which will be the end of our programming the Image 2.0 for the time being, and I released a little
side thing I have been working on called "BBS on a Stick" basically what it
is is you put a USB stick in a PC double click a RUNME.BAT file and it boots TCPSER and WinVice and gives you a full blown BBS after you configure it up. It's portable so you can make copies and work on your BBS on any PC...

If anyone is interested in running a Commodore BBS with Image BBS software,
you can download the zip file from Facebook in the Image Group. It's
been about 25 years since I released something to my former sysOp group
(NISSA New Image SysOp Support Association) and I am pretty happy with
my release so I wanted to let more then just the Image folks on Facebook
know about it... Thanks for reading my drivel.. :)

I'll try to find this group or wait for it to be hatched out. This sounds pretty dang awesome. I don't currently have an actual C64 (*sadface*) but maybe
I can play around with it, and will certainly host/archive releases.

Do you have a board we can connect to and play with it?

Nice work! I hope there's a bit of interest from the C64 fans. I never got along well with the C64, though they were popular when I was in my teens. :)

Do you have a telnet address we could look at it?

on, you have access now.. Compared to what we all are running today, that
thing was the Cadillac of Commodore BBS' back in the 80's and 90's.. Today
not so much but will be again.. ;)

Yeah I can tell! It looks and runs good! I like it, I remember calling so
many BBSes like that back in the day. Do you have a modem/phone line hooked
    up too?

Sounds like they both died fairly young. :(

I might check it out. Is it the basis of your "bbs on a stick" software,
or will that be something else? Is the "Image Group" the same thing as the NISSA group?

Actually, I was going to hook up a modem via Sexpots, I still may if I can
get it to connect. I just haven't had enough time to sit down and play with
the setup to get it to at least work..

Actually, the first (John Moore, Little John) was pretty young. The second (Fred Dart, The Chief) was pretty old..

Yes, it is the basis of it, The Image program (free for a while now) is the software that runs on the "stick" it can run either on USB or Hard drive.. I just chose USB because it makes it portable.. There is no NISSA group on Facebook just the Image group.. As soon as I get a chance to log on to The Agency I will upload it there and Paul will hatch it out.. :)
