• Thursday again

    Hello

looks like it's thursday again. The weeks just keep rolling by.

Kind of bored today. There are plenty of things I could be doing but none
    are really appealing at present.

Been distro hopping a bit, as my brother in law has been playing WoW, and
I can't do that in OI. So back to Linux it is. Went through fedora,
ubuntu and back to openSUSE. fedora with mate, ubuntu with gnome, and on openSUSE I installed cinammon. Oh I installed lumina on ubuntu too.

Probably will settle here for a little bit.

    Exciting times.

    Andrew

Yeah, I'm not one to remember keyboard shortcuts, so prefer something
with window bars. Years ago I was into tweaking my desktop and would use windowmaker or blackbox, but these days I'm lazy and can't be bothered
    writing my own menus etc.

Sometimes I like doing things like that.. It's good to learn about different things and what you like and don't like.

In the past, my favorite Linux distro was often SuSE (and later OpenSuSE). Currently I really like Linux Mint with Cinnamon. Ubuntu isn't bad either.

fedora 30 was quiet good, but it didn't have yast.

The only thing I don't like about ubuntu (and others) is there movement
towards snap / flatpak packages. Not so much flatpak but I really don't
    like snap packages.

With me running Ubuntu on three systems here, that is one thing that has me concerned as well. I've tried installing packages with snap, and none of them have been successful. I guess there is also an issue with security with the snap packages as well...

I've already noticed on this system, running a fresh 19.04 install, that I can't get programs like notepadqq anymore. They are only available via snap, and those don't install on here... I might have to change over to Debian in
    the near future...

That's really odd. I don't pretend to understand exactly how/what snap is really doing, but it should 'just work.'

I remember having quite a bit of hesitation when LXD went from an apt package to a snap package. Surprisingly it migrated my containers and removed the old apt package and everything is running smoothly.

I think part of the idea with snap is to more containerize applications so
they reduce the risk of breaking the rest of the system. I kinda see them as something like 'virtualenv' to run a Python script with a specific version of python without breaking the rest of the system.

Notepadqq still has a PPA if you want to install using apt.

    Launchpad PPA
This method is not recommended. Use the above snap package instead.

To install Notepadqq, simply run the following commands in a terminal:

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:notepadqq-team/notepadqq
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install notepadqq

I feel like the version numbering has been getting a bit crazy with some Linux distros and other software. Seeing 'Fedora 30' just seems a bit funny for some reason. Same with the version numbering of Firefox and Google Chrome.. Windows is still only on Windows 10, and Mac OS X is only on version 14 (even that sounds a bit funny, because the X in Mac OS X stands for version 10).

The only thing I don't like about ubuntu (and others) is there movement towards snap / flatpak packages. Not so much flatpak but I really don't like snap packages.

I'm not familiar with snap/flatpak.. Linux Mint is based on Debian and Ubuntu, so it might have a bit of that too. I've installed Debian (.deb) packages in Mint though..

Besides, I'm sitting on an old version of Mint which isn't supported and I'm not inclined to upgrade just for that.

I use ubuntu on my server because it updates more frequently than debian (ubuntu LTS vs debian stable) and since this isn't a production commercial server, the updates are worth the risk. That said, I'd never use ubuntu as a desktop.

If you like things lightweight and to never break, and also like the synaptic package manager, try rolling some sort of minimal debian desktop. For a ready-made turnkey setup, check out "Bunsen Labs". It's a favorite of mine.

For me, personally, the desktop experience is something I expect to tweak and break and putz with; in my opinion, that's all part of the fun. That said, there's no beating Arch. It's really just...perfect for my linux desktop. I highly recommend it. It's rewarding, you learn a lot, and it's not nearly as scary as you'd think. It's also pretty bloat free. Check it out! :)

Compared to Eclipse and Visual Studio proper, not so much. Compared to Geany and Notepad-plus-plus (the plus key isn't working still... I hope it's just Telix being a pain), it is bloated.

So, I guess it comes down to how you use VSCode: as a text editor, it kind of is bloated; as an IDE, not too bad. It is built with the Electron framework, which is built with JavaScript on Node.js (I believe); the same framework as Atom and Adobe's Brackets. That might explain where some of bloat is coming from.

Let me know how it goes! I believe with the right extensions instslled, it works really well as an IDE. Like I said, I found a set of good CFML extensions for VSCode, and I have myself a decent IDE for the work in applications written in ColdFusion. <thumbs up>
