I just found this today (I'd prefer a written article rather than a
video, but that's beside the point) - Apparently, there's a
class-action lawsuit against Apple going on now. They argue Apple has
a monopoly on how iOS apps are sold -
Their App Store is the only way to buy apps for iOS devices, and Apple charges
developers a 30% cut on the profits, which contributes to driving app prices up. The video:

Seems like this could be an interesting case. On most other computing platforms, people can buy software from anywhere they want, and
developers can easily charge what they want. I know Apple likes to
ensure a good experience by keeping their iOS devices inside a walled garden, but I also like to be able
to do what I want with the things I purchase. I think it would be
good to be able to get apps from other sources and have less
restrictions on them.
I am familiar with jailbreaking, and I'm aware that the jailbreaking process adds an additional source of apps. Apple's App Store is the
only "official" source of apps for iOS though.

Not sure how I feel about this... In general, class action lawsuits
pad the pockets of the lawyers and 'punish' the companies. You
know what you're getting when you buy an iOS device. You don't
want the 'walled garden,' buy something else! :-)
To 'punish' Apple for their practices though... How is it a
monopoly if you can go elsewhere for apps in general? No one
is forcing you to buy an iOS device - there are other options
for smart phones, so you have a choice. That's like suing
Verizon for not allowing me borrow minutes or data from my
friend who has extra on AT&T...

At least for iOS devices though, you can't go elsewhere for apps.. I think that's what it's all about - If you own an iOS device, the Apple
App Store is the only official way to install iOS apps. It's similar
to how Mac OS X is officially only available for Macs.. Though it's possible to install it on a "hackintosh", that's not officially supported.. There hasn't been a monopoly lawsuit about that though.
You can buy a computer elsewhere, it just won't be able to run Mac OS
X.
Yeah, I guess I just don't understand how that's a monopoly. :-)
Guess we'll wait for the courts to decide, or Apple to pay a few
pennies to the people and a whole lot MORE to the suits. :-)
