    Hello everybody!

Just got my desktop computer back from storage... after 16 hours of windows updates it's almost ready for me to install a game on. LOL I forgot how fast this thing was.

The crazy thing that once you get all the updates, there will be a new one in the next couple of days. At work, it seems like every time I open Visual Studio 2017, there's some update.

Just, plesse, Microsoft! Let me work!

Ah, I'd forgotten how much I don't miss Windows.

I've got an older Dell workstation with a RAID card that's *mostly*
supported under Windows 10; the system won't accept a major update and is
    stuck running a 2017 Windows 10 version.

I'm wavering on installing Windows on it again, tempted to put Mint on it
and make a Windows 7 VM for the few Windows things I need to do...

The biggest issue before biting the bullet has been consolidating duplicate photos, music and videos before copying them to my backup drive... So much stuff...

and make a Windows 7 VM for the few Windows things I need to do...

I still keep a Windows 7 VM around for the few Windows apps I need that don't either run under Wine or have a Linux replacement, but over the years that list has dwindled down to just one: a genealogy package (I'm not a gamer, so games were never an issue for me). What happens when that app drop support for Win7
    I haven't decided.

The biggest issue before biting the bullet has been consolidating duplicate photos, music and videos before copying them to my backup

I consolidated my digital life onto my first NAS about five years ago, and
have since added a second. I now run my own web and email servers, VPN, cloud, media center, etc., and run nightly triple-redundancy backups of the important stuff. While I could do all of that on any Linux box, the NAS is utterly silent, rarely needs attention, only draws about 16W, has mobile apps for everything and is dead simple to set up.

Back "in the day" (when I worked tech support for Microsoft) we had a joke
    that some here might remember:

"Windows has detected that your mouse has moved. You must restart your system for the changes to take effect."

Undoubtedly Windows isn't *quite* so bad these days but, sheesh, on Linux I
can do an entire dist-upgrade in place without rebooting. Let me know When you can upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 in the background and never have to
restart or go hunting through the internet for updated drivers.

Only a year. Yes it's horrible out of date, but still so much faster
then a laptop which is all I've had since Feb 2018.
