Today I drove and hour and a half up the coast to a little place called
Oamaru. They have a chocolate factory there and we bought a few bulk bags of assorted lollies or candy depending on where in the world you are :)

We (my wife, may daughter and I) spent about 3-4 hours looking around and enjoying a change of scene from being in Dunedin... then drove back home. Having McDonalds for dinner as a treat then going to watch some Bathurst
motor sport racing on the telly tonight. The big race is tomorrow (my Sunday) and runs for 6 hours and 100+ laps :)

Hope everyone is well and going OK. I hear that vk3jed is being super human again ;-p

    Best, Paul

Sounds like an enjoyable day. I missed a chance to visit the Cadbury factory in Hobart back in 2000, because of time constraints on a round Tasmania road trip.

Haha track season started yesterday, I posted about that elsewhere. :D

    Hey

How's everyone's weekend going / or going to go?

We went shopping for food this morning, then went to a garage sale on the way home which was a bit of a fizzler.

I'm currently compiling the dependencies for firefox on freebsd - setting up this desktop on freebsd instead of void linux.

Synchronet is running well, been having a bit of fun customizing it - nothing major, just different menus and installing a couple of mods for message readers
    (the digital distortion ones).

Thinking about writing a new door game, but not sure what I want to make it about. I have all these old 80s BASIC program books which in my opinion are great for inspiration for door games. I'll have to go through them.

It's still only Friday night here but just glad to be done with the work
week. Thinking about cracking open a beer soon and maybe playing some Path of Exile with my brother and step dad shortly.

Rest of the weekend plan to avoid the heat when I can -- it's finally
starting to feel a little bit like summer out here in southern California -- but nothing crazy hot yet at least.

Next weekend the girlfriend and I are heading to Vegas so I am sure it will
    be pretty hot there then.

Great idea using the 80s books as inspiration! Maybe if it gets really hot
this weekend I'll have an excuse to turn on the AC and practice some more MPL scripting to prepare for some "DOOR" ideas that have been trapped in my head but for now just going to use some create some scripts to add custom menus to my BBS for now.

Hope the rest of your weekend goes well!

Heh, yeah. I've only really made one door from a basic book, that was oregon trail (It's not a door in the book, just a game to play), but they have lots of

Bit of a mixed bag. Had a really bad night's sleep last night, which led me to sleep in and make up a little time, rather than get up early for the Parkrun. Ran a decent 3.3k cross country this afternoon on a tough and windy course.

Tomorrow, I plan to do a track session, and if I feel up to it, follow that with some gym work. Have to keep the preparations up for the coming summer. :)

It's still only Friday night here but just glad to be done with the wor week. Thinking about cracking open a beer soon and maybe playing some P of Exile with my brother and step dad shortly.

I haven't played that.. is it a bit like diablo? Or am I thinking of something else..

Yes it is an ARPG like Diablo but they have done some unique twists to it. I was not a fan of it when I first tried it a couple years ago as the combat compared to Diablo 3 was lacking. But I am enjoying playing it this time
around as it seems that have improved on that. One thing I like is all your abilities are based on gems you find that you socket into gear so it kind of forces some variety on builds and while it is possible to switch build types I think it's a nice way to make it feel like you organically build out.

That is also one of the things I really like about Skyrim -- Whatever class
or abilities you want to use -- you just practice those specific abilities
and you get better at it.

Path of Exile is also free and you get can get on Steam if you have it to
make it easily tied to a steam account vs creating a separate account. One other cool thing is when in your in town it's like an MMO instance hub where you see other players so makes it feel like an MMO and there are notice
boards people can post to if they want to form groups for things etc
otherwise you can solo quest probably fine until some true end game content which I am nowhere near yet. It even starts out with a "Global" chat turned
on where everyone on the servers can chat if they want but I feel it is distracting and turn it off as I like to experience the content more.

Heh, yeah. I've only really made one door from a basic book, that was oregon trail (It's not a door in the book, just a game to play), but
they have lots of simple text based games, which work well with BBSing.

Do you program in languages other than pascal?

My first programming language was basic when I was kid -- I then learned
Pascal in high school when I was running my dial up BBS and dabbled with DOOR programming then.

After that I learned C, C++ but never did anything viable with them. Done a
few C# projects -- dabbled with Unity 3D game engine which also supports C#
and messed around a little with Objective C for iOS development.

Out of all them C# is probably the easiest for me use now without referencing things constantly. But I am enjoying getting into MPL scripting and it's an interesting flash back to when I used Pascal over 20 years ago.

Right now it's just nice with MPL I can at least be prototyping things within Mystic and have access to all the Mystic data without worrying about the
"DOOR" concepts. Then if I feel I want to expand I can always port to
something that can be used for other systems.

Thanks! Originally it was supposed to be a family gathering for my grandmother's birthday whom lives nearby. But my parents who were planning it all realized they were not able to come out due to some unexpected finances.

So I spent last week in Bangkok, and discovered when I was flying home on Friday that my connecting flight out of Sinagpore was delayed 17hrs :(

At home I have a sick wife and children, so delaying for another day was a
    bit inconvenient.

I nearly didnt make the flight home - Qantas put me up in a hotel and said "A coach will pick you up". Well no coach came, and calls to the concierge and Qantas (Singapore) phone number knew nothing. "Just wait they will pick you up".

The flight was due to leave at 1pm, and at 11;50 I decided to ring the Qantas Singapore lounge at the airport - and their advice was to get to the airport
    by taxi quickly!

Who knew you could checkout (I was pretty much downtown singapore), grab a
cab and be at the departure gate in 40mins - pretty good. It must have been
my lucky day, immigration was empty.

So today, I've been handballed the kids and we are off to a party...

Actually I wasnt freaking out - I'm a pretty (almost tooo) relaxed traveler.
(I travel a lot for work.)

Its not the first time I've been put up because of flight delays - my last one was when I was in LA (heading to Mel) - and the two A380 planes wingtips clipped each other, when they bought the planes to the terminal from the planepark(?). That was an expensive error from the ground transport.

Anyway, I knew that if I didnt make it, I'd head up to the Qantas desk and
say, well I'm here because you didnt pick me up, now what are you going to do with me? BTW: I'm hungry... :)

Phew! That would have been stressful. I always give myself more time than needed to accommodate unexpected things ... but that tale takes it to a new level... phew...

A tip - I'm always "early" when I'm heading to the airport to catch a flight
    - because if you are late its "your problem".

But in transit, its always the airlines issue. I'm pretty relaxed normally (everybody makes mistakes - no point going nuts). I actually surprised at the number of people who do go nuts thinking it will get them somewhere (it never has).

I was once on the way to Korea, domestic Mel->Syd, then codeshare Syd->Korea. Because it was codeshare, I couldnt get a boarding card for the 2nd leg.

Qantas was late leaving Mel, which meant I arrived in Sydney when the
codeshare was boarding. I had to go the front desk (before immigration) to
    get a boarding card.

When I arrived, they said "sorry flight closed, your late" - to which I said "OK, now what are you doing with me?". Another guy rushed up 2 mins after me, breathless and went nuts. Yelling, the plane hasnt left, yadda, yadda, which really pissed off the staff.

I just asked what they would be doing with me, since it wasnt my fault I was late. Sydney is always busy in immigration, but the desk staff got me through immigration in front off all the queues and onto the plane (felt like a king
:) and I discovered they held up the plane for us (only a few mins in the
    end).

Moral - things can be done, if the right approach is taken :) (Just dont let
it be your fault in the first place!)

How's everyone's weekend going / or going to go?

My wife wasn't feeling well at all (unusual for her), so we stayed in this past weekend and I took care of her. We watched a movie and some TV shows, and I also tinkered with my new PC build a little.

Synchronet is running well, been having a bit of fun customizing it - nothing major, just different menus and installing a couple of mods for message readers
    (the digital distortion ones).

I'm glad you enjoy those (I am the author of the Digital Distortion stuff).

Yep I thought you were. I modified the header to mach the colours of the footer, though I'm not sure if I've installed it correctly. From reading the documents, I thought there was a list mode, but haven't worked out how to get to it. I think I might need to edit the command shell?

I may also have a bug report for you as soon as I figure out what I did (the headers were wrong for the message, though I can't remember how I did it and haven't done it since - I think it had to do with changing areas)

I'm quiet happy with it though, it works well - a little bit easier for me than
the traditional way synchronet displays messages

Yes, to get it to start up in list mode, you have to run it with -startMode=list on the command line. From JavaScript, you could do so this way:
    bbs.exec("?DDMsgReader.js -startMode=list");

    From Baja, it would be:
    exec "?DDMsgReader.js -startmode=list"

I may also have a bug report for you as soon as I figure out what I did (the headers were wrong for the message, though I can't remember how I did it and haven't done it since - I think it had to do with changing areas)

I'd be interested in hearing about that if there's a bug.

I'm quiet happy with it though, it works well - a little bit easier for me than

Rob Swindell posted a video on his YouTube Synchronet channel not too long ago about some features he was adding, which look to be fairly similar to my reader, with a scrollable message reader interface and an enhanced message list interface. He made some commits to the C++ source in the Synchronet CVS to support that, but it looks like he will also have a JavaScript script (or more than one) to support that too, which I think haven't been released yet.

Yeah, I'm not sure I was pretty tired at the time, and I think I did something weird with the terminal (Was using freebsd 'telnet' from console, and it detected ASCII only then when I pressed an arrow key it decided ANSI was ok... it was weird, but that might not have been related.

Saturday here has been fine but really windy, strong winds, temps around
    14-18C today.

I woke up early and spent a few hours on BinkD tinkering with settings, then
my wife was keen to get Christmas decorations up so the morning was spent getting stuff out of the roof then put up around the house including the Christmas tree we have in a box. That tree is about 2 years old, prior to getting it we would get a pine tree branch and use that. I don't miss the
mess but I do miss the smell of the tree.

Watched some 'secrets of..' Netflix show about Fort Knox at lunchtime. Went
out for a bit of a drive down the harbour to a place called Port Chalmers.
It's only about 20 mins by car but a nice outing for a change of scene.

Swung by the supermarket on the way home to pick up some cooked roast
chicken, salads etc. Watched x 2 episodes of The Flash (up to season 2 now)
on Netflix and now back to playing with the BBS.

Things seem quiet online, and it's still blowing strongly outside. 7.45pm as
I type, sun is still shining, sunset around 9.10pm so won't be proper dark until after 10pm tonight. My summers are long days and short nights. It's
    light again by around 5am

fun seeing the big ships come in. Wallaroo is a tiny town, though so no containers etc.

Bummer about the wife, I'd like to see this show also and may sign
up if I can convince my wife of the merits of it. To be honest I'm
more likely to pick up Amazon Prime (??) I think that's what it is,
to watch the Picard Star Trek show which I would really like to
see. I am looking forward to watching the next Star Wars movie in
    4-6 weeks too :)

It's ok, she's pretty good actually. Yeah also looking forward to the
next movie. Hey, there's no reason why you can sub to disney + for a
little while and then swap it out for prime. you pay for a month at a
time, so just go for a month with one, then switch over. My
justification is that I'm not playing wow now which was about $17 a
month, and disney + is only $9. :P but yet may not keep it after
    watching the madalorian.

Of the inbetween films, Rogue One and Solo... I really liked Rogue
    One.

Yeah I did too. Haven't seen Solo yet, but would like to.

It's on Netflix, USA Netflix :)

Ah ok. So it's not on Nitflux then :P probably not on our netflix. Was
hoping to watch the new harley quinn animated show, but not sure how we
will get that if we will.

Different timezones etc.,.. and I guess some seasonal holidays
going on around the globe :)

    Sure, thanksgiving isn't it?

Heh, I think we call them shacks here. Yeah, sounds good. So many memories.

Yup north they call them batches and in the south island they are called
cribs. It took me a while to suss that.

It's a bummer as they sold the place some years ago and then the place was moved off on a house tuck and something else built on the site. Only my memories of the beach remain as the place has long gone. Ah well.

That's cool. My Dad lives on the yorke peninsuala in south australia
near wallaroo, which is also a port, they load grain there, always was fun seeing the big ships come in. Wallaroo is a tiny town, though so no containers etc.

This is not a huge port but quite a bit of frozen stuff I think passes through it. Not sure where most of the ships that visit come from but I guess a lot would come over from Australia.

It's ok, she's pretty good actually. Yeah also looking forward to the

I agree with the thinking, we have kept netflix for now but i don't watch
many movies on it as a lot of the content seems old and a bit limited in
range. But there are a few shows like the Discovery ST show, Altered Carbon, Lost in Space etc. that keep me hooked in. I also think I would drop Prime
and Disney after watching the show(s) I wanted to see.. so thinking the same here

Yeah I did too. Haven't seen Solo yet, but would like to.

Solo (in my view) was pretty bad, the plot was not as well thought out / written as Rogue One was. They were also in some ways locked into certain things with Solo already by what people knew of the character. With Rogue One it was a big blank canvas they could fill. I think they did a good job of it.

Ah ok. So it's not on Nitflux then :P probably not on our netflix. Was hoping to watch the new harley quinn animated show, but not sure how we will get that if we will.

Nitflux like our Fush and Chups :)

Yeah, hey are you getting pummeled with Black Friday sales in Australia? Over here the retailers have been pushing it this year... it's never been a big thing made of it until the last year or so... it's like they are desperate to find another reason to have a sale..

It is that, but if you just look at it.. it will click.

You need a main config with general paths, a links config for you links,
a route config for the routing and an areas config for the msg and file
    areas.

My main config is in a file called config, with three other files
included in that config.. areas, route and links.

It's possible to just put that all in one config but I split it like that
so it's easier to edit the areas and links config.

But at some point "fidoconfig" will just work for you.. I promise.. :)

(IMHO) and it's also has some bugs with the JAM and Squish message
bases. That said it has a lot of functionality.

    What bugs!?

Well bugs are everywhere, aren't they.

I have not seen bugs with jam or squish message bases although I don't
have much experience with jam bases. I don't use all of the husky
packages because some haven't fully matured. I don't use hptsqfix or
hptutil because of bugs I found years ago and have forgotten now. Those
issues may have been fixed in the mean time, I'm not sure. I use sqpack
to pack and purge the message bases when needed and I haven't seen any
    problems with that.

If there are bugs with squish or jam message bases I'd like to know what
    they are.

I have eyes on FMail. My BBS runs in a linode so wine is not going to

going to work for Mystic operators since Mystic only supports jam. I know
folks have requested jam netmail support in FMail but so far it hasn't happened. It may be a complex request, I'm not sure.

I have stayed away from hptutil either because of bugs that I encountered myself or read of others experiences. It has been too many years now and
I don't recall what they were.

But I have always used sqpack and never went looking for hptutil. Even

them up and run with them. Either that or I will let it create new ones. Not sure.

I heard Apam write something like that too.

    That quote was from him.

It seems to be trying quite hard to avoid the OADDRESS. I wonder if
there is a reason for that?

I don't know any good reason and it doesn't make any sense if you want to preserve all information from the original message.

Squish: I doesn't write the __ftsc_date field to the Squish
message base and exports 50% of the messages with a modified
    timestamp (seconds are always even).

    see the thread in MUFFIN.

I did see that in the muffin area but don't know what all this is
about so I didn't say anything. Are these bugs ml was refering to
    caused by HPT?

I don't know which tosser it was that caused the dupes. They thought it is a problem with the Squish message base format and all Squish tossers are affected. I looked in the source code and HPT does not store the original date.
I don't know if pass-through messages are affected too. I think Mystic had the
same problem, but Squish support has been removed anyway.

I have tested Squish (the tosser) and it does not has this problem.

I have stayed away from hptutil either because of bugs that I
encountered myself or read of others experiences. It has been too
many years now and I don't recall what they were.

But I have always used sqpack and never went looking for hptutil. Even
now with jam bases I use sqpack and that works for me, so I am
    satisfied.

Is this a forked version of Squish's sqpack?

I have eyes on FMail. My BBS runs in a linode so wine is not
    going to work for me.

You could run a VNC server or run the config program on another
    computer at home.

Is it possible to run desktop apps over VNC? I never knew that.

You could also run it without a VNC server over X11 port forwarding. I don't want to say that it is always a good idea, but it is possible. I don't know if anyone has tried to run FMail's FConfig with a recent Wine version. Wilfred wrote me that it was unusable in an older Wine version, but this was quite some
    time ago.

You need a main config with general paths, a links config for you
links, a route config for the routing and an areas config for the msg

My main config is in a file called config, with three other files

There is a BUGS file that mentions a number of bugs. I suspect that file

Yeah, I've wanted to play with HTICK for some time, but the setup
    time seems pretty daunting.

It is a daunting task. There is a node in net 153 with thousands of
message areas and a like number of file areas. He is using lanius's
squish I think. That still works for him. He has though of switching to
hpt but has all those areas that were all active at one time and doesn't
want to lose any of that.

I would do it myself but it would likely take months to get it done!

He also uses Allfix for his file areas. At one point he updated allfix
and it blew up. Since then he hasn't been able to send files to links. I sometimes get a tic from his node but no files. Ever.

The same situation there. An update to something (or perhaps a fresh
allfix install) is needed, but all those file areas would need to be
    added, correctly.

Maybe it was Squish-only a long time ago. The Husky software uses SMAPI, which is a fork of an older Squish API (from Lanius) with added JAM support.

    Hey :)

Well today we took a friend who is staying with us for a few days down to the local Botanic Garden so she could meet up with some other friends she has.
This person is visiting us from the North Island but used to live her and
is a good friend of my wife.

After we dropped her off my wife and daughter and I ended up at the Otago Polytechnic plant sale, which was something we just drove by and found by accident. It turns out they have like a school of gardening or horticulture
and the students had been learning all sorts of propagation tricks/tips and
the plants left over at the end of the year were being sold at a low price.

So we bought a few things for the flower garden at home and were happy with
the items we got for the low $$ spent.

After that we ended up at an Op Shop run by Presbyterian Support Services.
They seem to run a few of these shops around the country but it you're
looking for all sorts of random stuff it can be a fun hour to poke around a shop like that. We came home with a few books and my daughter bought a Sims
    PC game on DVD.

It was hot first thing and I got the lawns mowed but later today we've been
hit with strong winds and the rain has set in along with a sharp drop in the temp.

Tonight I've watched the latest episode of Star Trek Discovery and then hit Netflix to soak up some IT Crowd.

Now to playing on the BBS and then I'm on cup of tea making duties.

Saturday for me - the day started slow but finished fast. :D

First up was a ham radio net, with exactly one person (me!). :D Oh well, that didn't go to plan. :D Went to the gym for my mobility/prehab routine that's designed to keep an old fart like me capable of moving fast. :)

And this afternoon, had my Saturday track meet. Started with the discus and ended up throwing almost 18 metres, which was good, considering the shoulder of my (discus) throwing arm is quite stuffed ATM, due to a training mishap last month, and I unintentionally aggrivated it on Thursday night by swimming 1km.

Finished with the 400m, ran that in 62.80 seconds, which stacks up well with my times over the last 2 years, and I'm on a dodgy Achilles (Thursday's swimming was to maintain cardio fitness without stressing the foot).

Anyway, I have to rest from running tomorrow, but I might do some aquatic exercise in the pool (not swomming!), as it's going to be 37C. Also have another ham radio net in the morning, hopefully I'll get some takers. And the local club net at 1PM. And a coffee catchup too.

So, you can run DOS doors in DosBox?? I didn't think it handled them correctly. Am I wrong? I recently got all the Sunrise Doors registered. (BTW, thats free if you goto sunrisedoors.com..) I'd like to run a couple of my favorites - AND, I want to run the original FORBIDDEN SUBJECTS 1,2,3 file door. MegaDoor or something... can I use DosBox on my Pi to doso??

That might be due to using an SD card? If you have a usb 3 ssd I bet it's
quiet a bit faster. Possibly even a usb HDD (I have a usb HDD in mine but
it takes a little while to spin up if it's asleep).

So, you can run DOS doors in DosBox?? I didn't think it handled them correctly. Am I wrong? I recently got all the Sunrise Doors registered. (BTW, thats free if you goto sunrisedoors.com..) I'd like to run a
couple of my favorites - AND, I want to run the original FORBIDDEN SUBJECTS 1,2,3 file door. MegaDoor or something... can I use DosBox on
    my Pi to doso??

Dosbox works pretty well for dos doors, it doesn't have file locking, so
you can't run the same door on multiple nodes. Also, I don't know if it's
still necessary, but I use a particular SVN version, as it seems to work
better for doors than the latest. It's much quicker than QEMU and has the
    same limitations.

A lot of people will tell you Dosbox is no good for doors, but in my
experience it tends to work well and in some cases better than dosemu.

I also use a "dosbox shim" I wrote for use with magicka, that makes dosbox
work like dosemu in that it works with stdio redirection.

I wrote a howto in the magicka documentation you can see it here:

    https://tinyurl.com/y479anu5

You can get the shim by cloning the magicka repository and changing into
the utils/dosbox_shim directory and running make.

If you have any issues let me know.. I have used this method on my PI, on windows 10 64-bit and various other OSes that don't have dosemu (like
    SunOS, NetBSD etc).

Yep, op-shopping is fun too :) we go occasionally, though many of the op-shops here have upped their prices by quiet a bit, I guess to appeal
    to the hipster type.

Are op-shops what we call thrift shops? Around here the price on my
favorite item, film cameras, has gone way up. I used to buy Olympus
    Mju-IIs for $5, now they're $50, and $150 on eBay!

I think so. Op-Shop is short for opportunity shop, they're stores run by charities that sell items people donate.

I know exactly how you feel with regards to the cameras, I used to be able
to pay $20 for a Commodore 64 plus disk drive tape deck joysticks etc etc.
Now it would be at least 10 times that.

I recently went to dust off one of my film cameras, went to
Yorkphoto.com, my favorite online film processor and found out that
Snapfish bought them - and no more online film processing. They used
to be around $4/roll with shipping. I suppose now I'll need to pay
    for high-end film processing online.

ah that sucks. Is it more difficult to find film as well now?

You know what, apam... thats a decent thought. I hadn't thought to make sure he was on a good SDcard. I, also, run an SSD on my bbs pi. And I'm like dude, these things aren't you know... iMac powerhouses, but they are pretty darn capable. He wasn't having it, just thinks they're slow and not very worthwhile.

I'll have to tell The Godfather to check his SDcard and make sure its what, an a2 or higher...?

Understood. I have SVN installed and running pretty well - oh, well I guess not on my Pi but... I know about it and how to get it rocking. I think I can set Mystic to not allow a door to run if another user is on. May need to use semaphores but I can hack it up. THANKS; I am pretty familiar with DOSBox and for some reason just thought you couldn't use it w/ Mystic doors.

This is awesome, I want to get FORBIDDEN SUBJECTS 1,2,3 running its old 1993 door file server. :P Just for fun, just because its how I remember accessing those CDRoms. Fun.

A lot of people will tell you Dosbox is no good for doors, but in my experience it tends to work well and in some cases better than dosemu.

Also, DOSEMU is a b*tch to get rolling on a Pi... easily. They removed it from the Ubuntu repo and last time I tried getting dosemu2 in it was heck and a half.

Nope, I just go into my freezer. I have two tupperware containers full of Kodak Portra 400, Portra 160, and Fuji 100 film. It should last a while.

First up was a ham radio net, with exactly one person (me!). :D Oh
    well, that
    didn't go to plan. :D

What's a "ham radio net"? And don't say something you use to catch ham radios :)

Otherwise known as a "sked" (scheduled operation), where a group of people come up on air on a predetermined frequency/mode to talk.

The day is coming to and end here.

Been wet all day with heavy rain for most of it. The other day we had 25c then today it was 13c so quite a drop and we had the log fire burning wood again.

Helped our youngest boy over the last couple of days, poor kids was in pain with an abscessed tooth. He ended up having to have it extracted as it was too far gone :( So we've been back and forth to his flat trying to keep him well fed with food that he can eat aka soft stuff like mashed spuds and gravy etc.

I did the dinner duties tonight and cooked for six... we had three members of the family come to visit us today. It gave my wife a night off which she needed.

Tonight I have been trying (again) to figure out how to add additional configuration to a docker nginx-proxy and lets encrypt combo I have managed to get running. The thing is the current set up I followed from a web tutorial only allows for the combo to serve up one website and what I want to do is have the above docker images/containers serve up another site. But it's how best to do this.

I'm not a nginx user but I think I need to create a custom.conf file and add a link to it in the volumes: section of my docker-compose.yaml file for jwilder/nginx-proxy

    ./custom.conf:/etc/nginx/conf.d/custom.conf:ro

..and then I think I need to somehow define a basic nginx config for my second website...

I have the HTML on another Linux box on my LAN so I need to point the config file to look at that when incoming traffic via the reverse proxy is addressed to the domain name I want to serve. I think that's it.. it's the how :)

    Time to get some sleep.

    Best, Paul
