From Avon@21:1/101 to All on Sat Apr 6 14:38:14 2019
Not long up, been doing some more on the Mystic Wiki and soon to go for a
walk at the local botanic gardens as it's a nice but cool Sat morning here. I need some fresh air. I'll do more Wiki work this afternoon and look at some admin stuff for fsxNet. Last night I watched the Ghostbusters rebooted movie from 2016... it was so so... 5/10 for me. I also re-watched the Avengers Infinity War part one movie... preparing for part two that drops in another

I'll post some more later when I have some more time. It's been a bit quieter here as of late but I'm aware there are other things occupying some folks
some in the BBS scene and others in real life demands etc.. and in the end
this is just a hobby eh :) That said it's always nice to chat with folks who want to take the time to post in bases across this network, and to those of you who do, I thank you.

    Chat soon :)

    Best, Paul

Thank you for providing this network Paul! I personally am glad to be back in this world after decades of absence. And sorry for the time I wasted in the modern "Social Media" world. Lots of great folks here and have enjoyed
getting to chat with a few of them!

You're not wrong about cooling down, it was all of 12 degrees Celsius today
and that's pretty cool for here. Autumnal temps and the leaves are starting
    to fall etc.

Yeah I had a day the was out and about we visited a local city garden, did
some op shopping, and after dinner I watched a doco about Freddy Mercury from Queen which was rather good. It went for two hours and covered a lot about
his life etc. before his death at 45 of Aids.

Hope the rest of your day went well too.

Well thank you for the kind comments and for taking the time to post. I enjoy chatting via echomail and I think others active here do also. I understand
some have got into IRC like chats and enjoy those too.. for me it's nice to
be able to read stuff when I wake up and not have to be in a chat room at the same time as someone else typing etc. It's never easy when you're in a
timezone that's different from others by a decent margin :)

Yeah social media is not as enticing as it once was when you see the privacy breeches and monetization of all of it. Not very appealing at all.

A weekend in RealLifeNet for me. :)

Saturday started with a shift at a fundraising BBQ at a local Bunnings (dominant hardware chain in Australia these days) store. Anyway, over the whole day, the BBQ raised $1000 for the fire brigade. :) Then after dropping home for a quick bite, I wandered down to the state rural fire brigades championships - this time for something different, as a spectator only. I haven't been to or seen rural championships for around 35 years. Enjoyed the afternoon thoroughly, both watching the events and chatting to various people. :)

Today started with a session at the track, which was mostly hurdling practice. Even fell at the last hurdle once (literally!) Finished with a little bit of speed endurance. Then into the middle of town for Bendigo's first ever Pride festival. I was part of the community reference group which had a major hand in organising the day, and managed to organise the CFA (our fire service) Pride group that is a LGBTIQA social/support group within the organisation. I spent a fair bit of time helping them, in between chatting to various people. Adding to the day was the stunning weather. :)

So now home and catching up on BBSing. :)

I had a pretty busy weekend myself. Saturday, I was supposed to go to Melbourne for the state relay championships, but one of the guys injured himself during the week, and all his potential replacements were also injured. :( So instead, I went to the fire station to help out with the open day for the public, which was a lot of fun. Then off to the other side of town for a relaxing massage, which I needed after recent events. And finally, a Christmas social gathering at the science museum, where I could be a big kid on thevertical slide. :D

Today I had a virtual command and control exercise at another fire station, which was very educational. I was part of the incident management team for a complex incident that resulted from 2 aircrafe colliding on the runway at a small airport. This required a rescue and sparked a significant grass fire near the runway, and at the very end, a hayshed became involved. The exercise was very educational, and it was my first experience of what's involved in managing a major incident. Up intil now, the biggest job I've actually run (as incident controller) was a minor grass and scrub fire, which was simple to manage.

Then my final stop for the weekend was a coffee afternoon. :)

I'm in the final hour of my 'paid' work day and had enough of it so sneaking

Hope you're all well. Sending you good vibes.

I'm entering week six tomorrow morning WFH. Since I have resigned from my job and only have two weeks left it's definetly getting less and less for me to do and thus more and more time spent on BBS:ing or watching Youtube.

Thanks good sir. How's life treating you? Are you in a lockdown also?

My brother and I own an auto parts store, so we are considered essential.
It's one of those things busines is half, but some income coming in is better than none.
We have access to some grants, but haven't heard back, so we still have to

    Hi All,

My weekend is coming to a close. I've spent a lot of time out in the car today running errands back and forth. Bought some new outdoor LED lights and updated what was on the outside of the house. They work well and it will make getting firewood during winter an easier task in the otherwise dark wood pile area we have.

Also bought a new non-stick frypan today (yes the excitement of it all I know) which is now best buddies with some recent pots for the gas hob we also bought. All our kitchen stuff has been getting worn out so it's nice to start to get a few new bits now and then.

Watched EP5 of Falcon and Winter Soldier y/day. I am enjoying this Marvel series and wondering now how they will wrap it all up in the last remaining episode?

Have also been watching S1 of X-Files again. I feel old! They all look so young now. hang on we all were! :)

This week at work may be a it quieter as I have my team leader and my usual co-worker both away. I may get some different things done this week which will be good. Less requests to do X or Y etc.

Been working on some NET 1 HUB stats reports for connection traffic and echomail traffic. They may appear in the stats echo tomorrow my time if the darn script works ;) It's a start anyways. Next up I need to get file reports running and posted.

Hope you're doing OK whereever in the world this finds you.

    Best, Paul.

That's nice! I had a look at the connection stats earlier today and (thankfully) they seemed fine, i.e. no connection errors etc.

Have been working on my Mystic BBS events and poll/export scripts here, so that polling for mail and exporting of echomail is not performed during ZMH, but instead postponed to after ZMH (to be compliant with FidoNet's ZMH restrictions regarding echomail transfers). For the very unlikely case that such a poll or export would result in a modem call to an uplink bossnode, preventing someone else wanting to crash (net)mail from doing so. :-D

I have also implemented BBS denial and FREQ denial during ZMH (but only for modem connections, not Internet connections). And kicking out of users from the BBS when ZMH starts (which sadly affects all connection types and has to happen twice daily to cover non-DST and DST).

Which makes me wonder -- is it even possible to deny incoming echomail transfers during (FidoNet) ZMH? As both netmails and echomails are messages indistinguishable from each other before inspecting their contents (I think)... Not that it affects fsxNet very much, though. :-)

    Avon,

I watched that last night! Really enjoying it -- but only one episode left
in the whole series (not just the episode)??? Like Wandavision, this must
just be putting the pieces into place for the next phase of movies, Loki series, etc. Hope so.

Not the actual ZMH, but as the appropriate Mystic event type ("BBS", which causes an exit and any users to be disconnected) can only have one start time, I have to have two events; one covering the start time during non-DST and one covering the start time during DST (one hour later).

Although BBS users are disconnected at the start times of those two events, they can reconnect again immediately after being disconnected, unless they try to reconnect via modem, in which case the Telnet wrapper for modem connections will refuse to launch the BBS because of ZMH being active (that check follows ZMH exactly, as it is implemented outside of Mystic) and display an error message instead.

I wouldn't even worry about ZMH nowadays.

It was designed that way in the 80's so mailers could get their stuff done without users on the line. That was a whole different time and place.

Even back then, you were only required to have a mailer online during ZMH.

Back in those days my mailer was up and down like a Yo-Yo!

dark wood pile area we have.
I am quite happy that we use wood chips in the meantime :-)

wood chips are a lot less heavy to lift I imagine :) I guess I do get some
sort of physical work out each winter as I lug in baskets of firewood. :)

My wife and i watch the serie together. I like this much more then WandaVision which was not bad, but the ending was too fuzzy and fast. Looking forward how Falcon and the Winter Soldier will end. I LOVE SEMO! What a cool guy, just like Bucky was as Winter Soldier. Really a very
    cool thing!

I too am looking forward to watching EP6 although I fear the way it is
wrapped up will also be rather quick and perhaps a bit messy. I guess with
all of these shows they can't truly wrap them up as they want to leave enough gaps to spin things out into a fuller story across other shows and films. What's interesting is to try and pick out little things in these shows that turn out in a few years to be a major thing later :)

I started with Tool Time from Tim Allen. I really really love that
Series. Tim Taylor and his Family are not just comedy but a really loo into how my kids will be in a few years :-D.

I liked it too. I didn't click that Tim Allen had this whole other show he
did that in a way was a refresh of the Tool Time show... Last Man Standing is not one I watched but I did become aware of it when they wrapped the final season and did a Tool Time cross over of sorts.

And yes, they all are sooo young *g*. Just like Tom Cruise in Top
    Gun.....

Sigh.. yeah... that makes us older and sorta wiser right?

That can seem like a thing but you might be surprised. For a given volume
the smaller the pieces are the better they fit, ergo the heavier your load.
Cut timber, so so, chips, a lot denser, sawdust the heaviest stuff you'll

I've got a gas fire thankfully, but the gas isn't cheap. And well, with
no income over the last 6 months, I'm really glad that they bill me on averages, because the last few months have been warm and my gas usage was basically zero. Other than hot water.

Hopefully by the time they check the meter I'll be able to pay for it.. I expect it to be big. A lot has to be said for taking advantage of a work place's aircon/central heating for staying warm 8 hours of the day at
    someone else's expense. haha

Been a long few days here. I'm still working from home but I think there may be movement towards asking us to come in a bit more in the coming weeks. My end of the country still has higher Covid rates than in other areas of New Zealand so I am not overly keen but if I must I'll go in but stick to wearing a mask for now.

My risk appetite is low as I have elderly parents I may need to visit / support again over the coming months as their health declines. There's few family near them so I am more at the front lines of care / response than others living further away than I, and that's fine.

At work our manager of 10 years abruptly left his role just before Easter. Our team found out one day before he left. We're now getting a new interim manager for 9 months who will develop new strategic directions for our team which may well lead to a restructure although no one is saying that yet. So understandably I and my fellow team members are all a bit nervous as to what is to come. Yet there's nothing I can really do so have to roll with the process and see where things end up.

Have been watching quite a few 80s movies on a free streaming service called Tubi which I have been enjoying. Some good, some not so good. After a day in front of the PC at home working I tend to want to get away from the same desk I would do BBSing at and opt for some tube :)

Figured I'd better post something to confirm I have not left with Elvis :)

Same here...but have been getting into the old Westerns (especially speghetti<sp>)
on You Tube. Pluto TV is also another one I like to use.

Snap Pluto TV here too... was using it to watch some Star Trek for a
while as they were the only place I could find that were streaming the
new Discovery show outside the USA for a time.

Used to watch Mission: Impossible on there...but they keep running the 1st 3 seasons over & over. Started watching The Outer Limits (from the 60's) on there as well. Heard they've also started running the Stargate series on there.

In terms of Star Trek...seems they only run the same TNG episodes over & over. As
for Discovery...still have to pay to see it here...while many other places get it
    on places like Pluto.

I think I've got every StarGate save universe on disc here somewhere..

I have a problem with streaming services... definitely in so far as I'm not seeing value for money in any of them.. you get a few things worth watching
and the rest is like The Boss says, 57 channels and nothing on. I'm
certainly not going to sign up to 20000 different services for 2/3 of bugger all on each one...

    Hi all.

Well it's Sunday morning here, I'm adding in three new nodes today and responding to a few emails and netmails for help etc. Once done I need to mow some lawns. My younger son is staying with us for a week before he moves to a new city. It will be strange not to have him living nearby. I hope his new move / job go well.

A reminder I'm going to start posting welcome and admin info over in FSX_NET now instead of here. I encourage you to sub to that echomail area if you are not already linked to it.

Gah, just the thought of having to push that lawn mower... ah well :)

    Best, Paul

I feel your pain! It's not been warm enough to have the lawn grow. It's the leaves from the trees that have fallen that I've got to attack. We've had rain every 2/3 days that don't let them dry enough to mulch up. I really will get to it, I promised my wife! :(

Ah a comrade in arms :)

Yep over here it's the middle of summer and if I don't mow each week it gets harder to keep on top of things. It's been windy here and mostly OK weather wise but I'm feeling lazy and it's a Sunday. Plus I am doing network admin for fsx and I want to eat junk food etc. hahahah..

I guess I can look at mowing lawns as something like enforced exercise and an offset for some questionable snack food eating.

    Good luck with your leaves!

The only reason I don't do lawns (anymore) is because I am an apartment dweller.

In my youth we had a large yard, everyone did in my area. It was half an acre or perhaps a bit larger full of gardens, trees and even a boulder my dad had shipped in from the interior for some reason. It was shaped like a sofa, kind of neat but it was a boulder!

I used to cut the grass with a push mower, for years I did that. I never thought anything of it at the time but I wouldn't do it that way today. :)

Did a trip up to the North Island to visit my parents.
Both are doing the best they can, so that's good, and it was nice to see them. I'm just catching up on echomail. It seems once I pulled the transportation echo this one has been full of cars talk :)
