Loved it, loved Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's view of the future -
gleaming cars, purple haired women in miniskirts manning a moonbase, and
a submarine that launches a jet fighter? Did I mention that I loved it?

I'd heard some theories that UFO and Space:1999 were in the same
    universe. --- SBBSecho 3.07-Win32

    I think they were?

UFO had some cool music and I like the mix of sub, moon base etc. also. The ships that fired the rockets at the UFO were a bit of a one hit wonder eh? Imagine if they hit the UFO... then that's the end of this weeks episode :).. and who builds a ship that fires one missile only... ah well :)

Space 1999 I liked too... have the show on DVD somewhere. I always thought
the comlock they carried was cool. Not sure how I felt about the Mia
character but I thought Alan did a lot of good flying in Eagle 1 and John always looked earnest :)

I quite enjoyed Space: 1999 when I was a teenager -- bought model kits for
the Eagle and Moonbase Alpha. I had been something of a Martin Landau fan
from Mission: Impossible, so I had a tendency to hear, "dun dun dun DAH dun"
in my head every time he appeared on screen :-)

(And I'll never forgive Tom Cruise for what the movies did to M:I. Ever.)

I've got the entire S:1999 series on my media server and have watched a
couple episodes as well as the epilogue, which I'd missed the first time around. Can't say as I'm enjoying it so much now for the same reason I never could get into Dr. Who. British sci-fi in the 70s was just too cheesy, though there was a bit less cheese with S:1999.

Never seen those -- because they're Tom Cruise movies.

I actually started hating on Cruise because of Rain Main. Dustin Hoffman is
one of my favorite actors, and I thought he was typically superb in Rain Man. I'm no prude, mind you, but Tom Cruise swearing like a sailor throughout what otherwise would have been an enjoyable family movie earned him a spot on my "avoid any movie with ____" list.

I grew up on Mission:Impossible, and the characters were like old friends to me. So I went to see MI1, despite it being Tom Cruise. Within fifteen minutes all my old friends from the TV show were dead -- except Jim Phelps, whom the movie turned into the bad guy, which was completely out of character. And the story plots transmogrophied from battles of intellect to mindless explosions and car chases.

    It's a grudge I still carry 23 years on :-)

Yeah, the music changes, losing Barry Morse's character, the clothing

One of the reasons the Tom Cruise M:I movies don't do it completely for me is that the plots all center on *him*. They're all about *him*. It's what we got because Cruise co-produced the films.

Mission: Impossible was about the TEAM, not any single member.

If I wanted a spy movie about a single agent, there are other better candidates.

I still watch them on video though, but I think of them as a different series altogether.

To change this conversation direction slightly. I've always wondered what
would be happening to Mr Cruise in the coming years as I feel he's painted himself into an action genre corner and he's just not getting any younger.

Regardless of how good or bad we might rate him (that's a price paid by any actor/actress I guess in the public domain) I don't think any amount of
plastic surgery, soft lenses, younger and younger leading ladies etc. will
prop up his 'youthful action hero' persona forever. It gets to a point where
(a bit like Daniel Craig now) the age differences are clearly there between a lead actor and his fellow actors/actresses and no story that demands action
is going to enable them to be able to keep up. :)

I went to a author talk with Lee Child who spoke at length about Tom Cruise
and listening to reader feedback about what they thought of the actor playing Jack Reacher. In short, after the initial contract had been fulfilled with Cruise - Lee Child has now turned to Netflix as the next outlet for his next film and with that, also looking to cast another actor to play the role.
