The modem is back online, still connected to an old Linksys PAP2T ATA, still over VOIP, still super shitty. I've limited connect rates to 14.4Kbps in an attempt to mitigate said shittiness. Maybe I'll get a real phone line hooked up at some point.
Dial in to +1-416-273-7230 if you're a masochist. I promise lots of slowness, pain, and discomfort.
JSON-DB service somewhat restored Sun Jul 16 2017 16:56:24
Something was hammering away at my JSON-DB server, causing instability. This probably led to intermittent problems with Oneliners, SyncWall, and various networked games. Should be resolved for the time being.
I've been absent from this hobby for a couple of months due to other commitments, but will probably get back into it in the near future and will try to catch up on unread messages soon.
I wrote a new game last winter and forgot to announce it here. It's a daily inter-BBS trivia game called Jeopardized! which borrows content from and matches the format of a popular TV quiz show.
Each day, 51 new questions are selected across 11 different categories. Players on all participating BBSs are presented with the same content, and are scored based on the "money" that they win and the number of correct/incorrect answers they provide. Built-in chat and notifications let you keep an eye on how other people are faring in the game, and what's happening on the BBS while you're playing.
You can find Jeopardized! on the games menu of this BBS. It's also available on maskreet's DoorParty game server. If you're a Synchronet sysop, you can grab a copy of it for your own BBS here:
You may or may not see some errors and oddities if I'm working on it when you visit. Don't be alarmed - it's usually stable unless I'm actively breaking and fixing it. :D
Pages and sidebar modules from ecWeb v3 (and possibly earlier) can be brought over to the new system with little to no modification. (It took me about 20 minutes to port over the user list page, the "Who's online" sidebar module, and the "System stats" sidebar module.)
This new web interface does away with a few annoyances, kludges, and problems presented by my previous efforts. It's easier to install and configure. It's built on Bootstrap (http://getbootstrap.com/), so it looks great on mobile devices - and there are plenty of themes already available.
New features include:
- File areas (with HTTP file downloads) - Unread mail indicator (no more cheesy JS alert()) - Per Group, Sub, and Thread unread message indicators - Message scan pointer updates - Sidebar show/hide toggle in small windows or mobile devices
I'll post an update here once it's been made available for others to install on their own systems.
